More Than Meets The Eye: Changing Seasons
June 12-13, 2021 Sermon
There is a saying that procrastination is the thief of time. All of us have some experience with putting things off. We do it for different reasons: anxiety about failure, lack of structure, the unpleasantness of what needs to be done. But there are times when the urgency of the moment requires us to overcome our hesitancy and seize the opportunities in front of us.
This passage of Paul's letter carries that sense of urgency, as Paul implores the Corinthians to accept the gift of God's race. Grace is a central concept to Christian theology. It speaks to the free, unearned act through which creation is restored to God. we need not work for it, but it must be accepted. Paul urges his audience to do so without delay, to accept restoration in God.
So why the urgency? Who would be in a rush to experience this kind of life? I try to imagine what it meant for the Corinthians to try and build a church community in a setting that seemed antagonistic to their goals. In a context with very different social, political, and spiritual norms, it seems there would always be conflicts. There would never be a perfect moment to go all-in on following the way of Jesus.
Procrastination often pushes us to wait for ideal conditions that may never exist. The fear of potential struggles and failures can cause us to come to a standstill. The gift of God's grace is not a simple solution to all of life's ills. It is a transformative perspective and way of life that enables us to recognize God's presence and power even in the direst situations. Grace transforms our view of ourselves and of others. We take the good with the bad, in ourselves and in the world, and recognize that neither of those defines us. Rather, through God, we are empowered to define our response to life. That is a possibility worth accepting without delay.

June Outreach Project: Faith Comes By Hearing Vision 2033
Until June 30, any gift you give will be matched dollar for dollar, reaching twice the people with God's Word in audio.
Countless multitudes around the world have never heard God’s Word in their own language—if at all. Most could not read the Bible if a printed version were available. They need Scripture recordings in their own language.
Every dollar you give toward our $350,000 Vision 2033 Matching Challenge today goes toward creating and sharing God’s Word with men, women, and children on every continent.
Your generous support for our "Noisy offering" is appreciated! We have collected $57.33 for this project.
