REGULAR WORSHIP SERVICE SCHEDULE
UPDATES
|
Traditional Service Begin This Weekend for 8 AM Worship. It's not worshiping without the organ, right? This service will have all the "bells" and stops pulled out for traditional hymns and organ offertories for early service.
Modern Service Begins This Weekend for 9:30 AM Worship. The blend of traditional hymns and contemporary choruses that developed over the COVID-19 season, with assistance from our Clavinova, will continue for this service.
Livestream Schedule Changes: The Saturday evening service will no longer be live-streamed on Facebook Live. Traditional Worship and Modern Worship services will continue to be livestreamed.

Did you miss a sermon or can't remember the good statement made by Pastor Jason recently?
|
|
When people ask you about yourself, do you tend to tell them who you are or what you did/do? Do our roles make us, or do we simply inhabit those roles? Maybe both of these ideas are true to some extent. I believe that we are not what we do, but we are shaped by how we do it. Still, at times, there may be a risk of losing ourselves in a role, of negating who we are in order to fit into an ideal.
Amos does not seem to have that problem. In fact, he is quite an ironic figure: a prophet who denies being one. In fact, he makes it clear that he is a shepherd and a gardener. He is neither a prophet nor a prophet's son. He is making a claim that he is not a part of a particular lineage or that he has inherited status. Amos is rejecting a title. He is also rejecting an ideology, an identity that is not his own. In his day there were temple prophets who were essentially on the royal payroll, but Amos is distinguishing himself from that group. He is not a prophet for hire. He is defined not by his affiliation but by his response to God's call. He was already busy with his own work when God called him to prophesy.
The selection from Psalm 85 gives us a picture of a God who cultivates God's people with salvation and peace. The imagery is telling: glory that dwells in the land, faithfulness that springs up from the ground, righteousness that looks down from the sky. The land, the ground, and the sky are all intertwined in the life of a shepherd and the gardener, who recognize their participation in the beautiful dance of the natural world. God's engagement with the people mirrors Amos's engagement with creation. That is a model to follow and embrace. True prophets reflect a close following of God's ways in the world.
Prophetic life, it seems, is not about grand gestures, sweeping proclamations, or public titles. It may be about the daily habits of cultivation and maintenance that enable life to flourish. It may be found in the hearing and pruning that help life to grow in the healthiest and most meaningful directions. Through Amos and the psalmist, we receive a lovely reminder that "prophet" is less a title and more a disposition. To be faithful to our daily labor and calling is truly prophetic.
