More Than Meets the Eye: Begging to Give
June 26-27, 2021 Sermon
|
|
If you have read the books of the prophets in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), you know well enough that the prophets were often charged to deliver difficult messages. For most people, delivering difficult news is not an easy task. People do not respond just to the message; they respond to the messenger too. In this weekend's passage, Ezekiel is made to stand and given a charge to deliver a message to a difficult audience.
Ezekiel was part of a priestly family, and so he had been trained in the rites and rituals of the priesthood. He was equipped and prepared to be a spiritual leader for the people of Israel. This position would have commanded some respect and status. But if the people had been rebellious for generations, they were not exactly keen on whatever the spiritual leaders were saying or doing. I imagine that rebellion ad a lot to do with frustration at their situation of exile. It can be difficult to take to God when your circumstances cause you to wonder if God is even listening.
How people respond to that communication makes all the difference. In Psalm 123, we have a model for response. The psalmist offers a message of contrition and a desire for mercy. The psalm is an acknowledgment of the place God holds in the life of the people. It communicates the relationship between those who serve and the one who is worthy to be served. It expresses a desire for a response from God. It is a call for divine dialogue.
Rebellion is a natural reaction to difficult messages. Our first brush with it is likely when we reach adolescence, moving from childhood to adulthood. We stop listening, seeking our own way. The dialogue is cut off, whether the other desired such action or not. Often we no longer hear God because we no longer communicate with him. I believe we are called to divine dialogue with God, to wrestle with difficult moments in our lives, and to find ways to live faithfully in the midst of them. Rebellion is an easy reaction, but the prophet and the psalmist show us what ist means to respond conscientiously to God.
