Few preachers get excited at the prospect of a lectionary passage that uses the words "fornication" and prostitute" repeatedly. Why did Paul write a letter that could be interpreted to be emanating fire and brimstone? Paul could not sugarcoat his words, because he wrote this letter to a church in trouble. Either the early church in Corinth did not understand the early Christian teachings, or the Corinthians were misinterpreting messages to suit their needs because a fixation on food was not the only issue in the church of Corinth. There is a list of issues, such as lawsuits, marriage, how to prepare and distribute the Lord's Supper, and liturgy. Such fixations were preventing the people of Corinth from knowing the freedom of being in community with one another. Paul was trying to guide the church, much like a shepherd guiding sheep when the sheep are lost and going astray.
Christian freedom is rooted in self-giving agape love, love without limits, without boundaries, and without restrictions. We are so radically loved by our Creator that we are compelled to create a world of radical love toward our neighbors. Loving limitlessly and creatively is not easy when people have their hearts turned inward on themselves and their own needs. Consider whether your efforts at self-improvement this year are turning your heart outward toward others or further inward, agonizing over diets or exercise regimens. Let your freedom from overindulgence free your heart to love others more abundantly, creating a community that expresses the love that God intended and created for us.
