Another year is over. A new one will begin. Every day gives us opportunities to live, work, and play. It gives lessons to learn, insights to discover, directions, and decisions to make. On this second Sunday of Christmas (the Christmas season is 12 days), we will find a hopeful Jeremiah, an ancient Israelite prophet, seeing a new day coming for hope and restoration. Those familiar with Jeremiah's usual behavior of warning that all is not going to be well may find this weekend's scripture passage startling in its hopefulness.
Your Christmas decorations may already be placed in storage. The season may already have lost its visible and tangible reminders and presence. We may have mixed emotions with our experiences and memories of this previous year. We try well to remember each year for both its challenges and comforts. It may be extraordinarily difficult to list the comforts of 2020 as it is easier to list its challenges.
The message of Jeremiah calls us to sing God's praise and shout for joy. God is bringing the scattered of Israel, the exiles of Babylon back home. Not just the healthy and young, but the blind, the lame, expectant mothers, those who travel was probably not advised.
In 2021, we await (with increasing expectation) the call that all hindrances have been lifted, attendance no longer constrained to limited gatherings. We look forward to this new day. While we are still waiting.

Each daily devotion includes a Scripture passage, an original meditation, and a brief prayer. Written by Christian writers from across the nation, these meditations share comfort and inspiration found in life's everyday details.
