Maundy Thursday Service
Thursday, April 1, 7 pm
IN-PERSON OR ONLINE
Maundy has more of an association with "maudlin" rather than Mandate. Gather with us on this meaningful evening as we recall Jesus' last commands, his mandate to love one another as he has loved us, and the act of service in washing his disciples' feet. While we will not have a foot washing service, we will have communion and readings of the betrayal, arrest, and trial of Jesus.

Easter Sunday is one of seven Sundays.
We celebrate fifty days of celebrating Jesus' resurrection, all the way to Pentecost--outpacing the forty days of Lent, and at the same time making up roughly one-seventh of the entire year, in effect a "sabbath" writ large for the year as a whole. The resurrection is so great a mystery, and calls for so grand a celebration, that merely one day will not do!
Jesus is always subverting our expectations of him. Easter is perhaps the greatest subversion of all. At the beginning of last week, the disciples think Jesus is their long-awaited political Messiah, riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. On Friday, they watch as their hopes and dreams are crucified high above the city, as Jesus demonstrates that he is not willing to fight but to forgive his enemies. And on Sunday, as the disciples sit in a state of utter hopelessness and shock, the greatest miracle in history occurs. Christ rises from the grave, subverting death and all the systems that came against him, desiring to put an end to his gospel through a show of brute force.
What is unexpected is how unrecognizable the risen Jesus is among his nearest and dearest followers. In Luke 24, he appears as a traveler who becomes recognizable only "in the breaking of bread." In John, he is a gardener who becomes recognizable when he called Mary Magdalene by her name. Yet over and over again, even the disciples fail to recognize him, and the Gospel accounts go to great lengths to let us know that the resurrected Christ is unrecognizable.
Easter is so much more than a literal grave raising two thousand years ago. It offers to raise our lives up, too, in whoever accepts him. The lesson is that Christ is present and at work now, through us, as gardeners, travelers, and when we share Holy Communion.
Christ is risen indeed, through you and me. May we take time this Easter season (7 Sundays!!!!) to gaze at the beauty of the light and life of the Divine that surrounds us at every moment of every day.

Several times a year, congregations receive a special offering to support the ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). These gifts are given above and beyond the regular core support of Disciples Mission Fund.
The Easter Offering, received by most congregations on March 28 and April 4, 2021, supports several of the general ministries of the Christian Church. Your gift supports college students in leadership development programs, global mission partners, health and social service ministries, the formation of new congregations, support for pastors and chaplains, and so much more.
Your gift has the power to change lives around the world. Give online now or through your congregation. Thank you.
