KVMRx—X Marks The Spot—for WINNERS!
| |
Two veteran KVMRx’ers, Jared Witkofsky—aka Dr Bad Weird (Creature Feature)—and KVMRx Program Director and longtime DJ, Jai Hanes—aka BBoy Supreme (Nobodi Famous)—have been awarded grants from Upstate California Creative Corps. These two have been shaking up the airwaves on X for over five years, and it’s no surprise that folks who give back to the community through the magic of radio give back in all the ways that make our community great. KVMR's been Nevada County’s secret ingredient for community building for 45 years, and it’s all part of the plan for KVMRx to attract our region’s next generation of leaders. We are so proud! Jared & Jai’s projects reflect their focus on inclusion and belonging. Check out their grant-winning projects.

With support from the Upstate California Creative Corps, Jared Witkofsky is creating a comic book telling the true story of his experience living with neuropathy and navigating life and the medical system with a disability. The 40-page, fully colored comic will provide information to connect people with vital services. You may have seen Jared’s art on some KVMR & KVMRx materials—a postcard with prairie dog deejays, a kvmrx sticker featuring architeuthis dux, and most recently KVMR’s 2023 pet calendar cover (featuring his dog, Rosy). Hear Dr Bad Weird’s Creature Feature Tuesday nights, 8-10 PM, worldwide at kvmrx.org or hyper local Grass Valley/Nevada City 105.7 FM.

Self Portrait of the Artist | Dr Bad Weird, aka Jared Witkofsky, has been making creative content on KVMRx since the early days. He hosted live-action role-playing games on the radio, which he coined "emotional gambling," has non-conforming musical tastes, and a great sense of humor. His show is fresh and surprising. And he's not the only one-- if you haven't checked out KVMRx yet, you're missing out.
Jerianne Van Dijk has reprised the classic- get it while you can! | With support form Upstate California Creative Corps, BIPOC culture bearer Jai Hanes designed an anti-racism youth program for Black, Indigenous, and Asian youth and their allies. The first class is Saturday, September 16, in KVMR's Community Room. Contact peaceclass456@gmail.com to let Jai know your teens can make it!
|
Jai Hanes has been working with at-risk youth as an advocate and counselor for over 20 years—and used his experience to create the curriculum for the P.E.A.C.E (Positive Elevation Arts Culture Education) Class based on the needs of young people of color navigating the whitest county in California—Nevada County. The class is open to BIPOC students 12-18 and their allies to learn skills to cope with microaggressions and hate speech, and become ambassadors for anti-racism. The first class is Saturday, Sept 16, 1-3PM in KVMR’s Community Room. Jai Currently is a counselor specializing in conflict resolution at the Nevada City School of the Arts, and is Program Director for KVMRx. Jai says, “It’s fresh, and it’s free. I’d love a headcount because we plan to serve refreshments.” Get in touch, peaceclass456@gmail.com.

KVMRx had its very first-ever membership drive 3 days in August—and 82 listeners donated, bringing in $9,000. For our li'l hyper-local station we're impressed with the show of support. Thanks so much to all the folks who donated, you are Founding Members of something pretty freakin' cool. If you didn’t donate but want to—you still can! DONATE HERE! KVMRx brings more access and diversity to our local media landscape. Creating a new avenue for more community inclusion is all part of our master plan to protect local access to public airwaves for future generations of community leaders, artists and makers, movers and shakers. We're here to keep it weird, keep it real, and keep it real weird in these foothills.

MystikAl & DJ Redlocks do Quality Control at Celtic Fest Beer Garden c. 2011 & 2012
|
Redlocks gives beer the 'thumbs up' after intensive product testing at KVMR's Celtic Festival, 2011. He's wearing a Utili-kilt, so he's ready for anything... at least some things.
If you would like to volunteer at KVMR's Celtic Festival register HERE.

MystikAl seems to be taking the lead on this tasting with his oversized mug. Just kidding, these guys are emptying the kegs after the festival is over and doing important work! Also, another look at the sexy utili-kilt in 2012!
Hap Hazard's Mad With Power!
Friday Music Magazine host, Hap Hazard, finally got a tee-shirt that gives him unbridled authority and the first thing he does is slap the cuffs on Celtic DJ and Festival emcee, Annie O'Dea Hestbeck?! This is so out of character-- it's almost like it's not even real! I guess anything can happen at KVMR's Celtic Festival!
|
Here's Hap again, really putting the screws to KVMR DJ and Live Broadcast host Eric Flaherty, as KVMR child prodigy and erstwhile host of "Jake's All-Request Beatles Half-Hour," Jake Michael, looks on in horror. What is Hap'ening?! Get it, "Hap"ening, because it's Hap Hazard?
If you would like to volunteer for KVMR's Celtic Festival, register HERE. We are especially looking for folks to be on the Green Team, and Safety & Assistance, aka "Securtity." Just don't let it go to your head, like some people!

Queens of KVMR. Left to Right: Meri St Mary, Dawn Fischer, and Jerianne Van Dijk have all been broadcasters and boardmembers, wearing different hats to keep KVMR thriving. Here, they are in front of KVMR's new building when it was new, circa 2015. Thank you badass women, for all you do to make KVMR great every day!

KVMRx DJ Dr Bad Weird put his Rosy in headphones for the cover of KVMR's 2024 Pet Calendar. Every day is the perfect day to look at cute pets, and sometimes it's helpful to know what day it is, too! Get your photos in now-- or totally miss out and let your pet languish in obscurity for all times, whatever, no pressure. petpinups@kvmr.org
Sequoia's people realized this stunning creature deserves local hair icon status, and sent her pic in. Sequoia will be featured in some month, and everyone's going to think she's better than your dog and her humans are more caring than you if you don't send a pic while there's still time. petpinups@kvmr.org
New Broadcaster Alert! Meet The Dave Guy
| |
|
Long Time Listener Joins The Ranks of KVMR Broadcasters
Medium Roast, Alternate Fridays 5-7am
| |
|
The Dave Guy sez, "I was born and raised in northern California. I’ve been interested in music since I was a teenager, which turned into a bit of an obsession as I grew older. One of my favorite activities is attending live music events. Lately the focus has been on americana, folk and bluegrass, but I’m up for most any type of music. I discovered KVMR sometime in the 80’s, was listening more in the 90’s, and by the 2000’s had become a KVMR convert. Part of my plans for retirement next year include becoming more active as a volunteer at KVMR, the California Bluegrass Association, and……? Stay tuned!"
His first show is tomorrow morning! Listen LIVE. Welcome aboard, Dave Guy!

2023 Celtic Fest Schedule
*A Rare Medium, Well Done was coined by longtime listener, supporter, staffmember, and boardmember Rick Sharkey. Rick is cycling off the board this year after 6 consecutive years, and a stint in the early 2000s. Rick's favorite show is Kani Ka Pila on Sunday mornings, but he's a tireless advocate for all the shows, even the ones he doesn't enjoy. We appreciate your hard work and dedication, Rick. Thank you!
You made it all the way to the end... You love us! We love you back. Be kind and have fun KVMR Family!
