What does YWS mean to me?

I became involved with Youth Without Shelter through a friend and current board member, Ryan Dzierniejko. In Winter 2010, Ryan went to visit the house to see how he could get involved. Shortly following the visit he told me what a great experience he had at the house and that together he and some of the guys at the house had come up with an idea of entering a team in a recreational basketball league. Ryan wanted some help with the organization and knew that I would be an easy sell. After some informal fundraising and organization, together with a group of eager and talented youth, the YWS Huskies were born. This past school year has been outstanding for residents in our Stay in School Program. Six youth proudly graduated from high school, three youth began post-secondary education, and two newcomer youth will be completing high school earlier than expected due to exceptional effort. Four of the new graduates will continue their education with a scholarship through the generosity of the Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation. In one afternoon on Sunday, May 27, the trackside tent at Woodbine Racetrack was filled with over 275 guests who came together to help homeless youth transition to independent living.
