Thursday, November 19
Zoom | 12:00PM EST
The subject of the body has deep roots in Western Architecture from the texts of the renaissance reading of Vitruvius we can fast forward to the culture of disembodiment brought about as a result of cybernetics, information, mediatization, virtual reality and in the long stretch in between all forms of architectural constructions of the body.
But, what body is the body in question?

EXHIBITION LECTURE
Stepwells of Ahmedabad: Past, Present and Future
Tuesday, December 1
Zoom | 6:30PM EST
In conjunction with the online exhibition Stepwells of Ahmedabad, Priyanka Sheth, Tanvi Jain, and Aashini Sheth will speak about traditional water structures that form the architectural vocabulary of the semi-arid regions of the Indian subcontinent. With a focus on a particular type of historic subterranean water structure called a stepwell, the lecture will touch upon issues of heritage, gender, patronage, and the current condition of these structures in the city of Ahmedabad. The talk will also explore and speculate about the future of urban water infrastructures in semi-arid regions by referencing traditional systems like stepwells to address the challenges of an impending water crisis posed by climate change.
The presentation will be followed by a conversation and Q & A moderated by Anthony Vidler.
This lecture is free and accessible to the public.

EXHIBITION
Stepwells of Ahmedabad
Monday, November 2 through Friday, December 4
Online
Stepwells of Ahmedabad is an ongoing, collaborative research initiative by a group of architects from Ahmedabad, India. This online exhibition presents their work on stepwells, the subterranean water structures found extensively in the semi-arid region of western India (see Gallery 1). The region’s architectural vocabulary has evolved historically in response to seasonal water availability, resulting in various types of water harvesting structures, including stepwells (see Gallery 2). A typical stepwell consists of a deep well shaft that taps into groundwater, and a stepped corridor that descends several stories below ground to access the water. The corridor often served as a social space, particularly for local women and travelers. The product of five years of research conducted in the city of Ahmedabad in north central Gujarat, the group’s work is presented here in the form of thematic essays, drawings, maps, photographs, and videos. Now in its fourth iteration, this exhibition intends to raise awareness of larger concerns about water, settlement patterns, heritage, and social relationships tied to stepwells.
