Baking Better Bread With Pure Water
About a year ago we reported on the great mission work being done in Bolivia by the Diocese of Joliet (Illinois). Around that time, the Diocese sent a shipping container with medical supplies – and 120 Sawyer PointONE Filters.
“It was slowed down by the pandemic and ended up getting there in February,” said our friend Mary Meyers, who is active in the mission effort. “But they have distributed all the filters now and there are 120 new Water Women providing clean water. And this is the first time the filters there have barcodes on them, so we are able to track them on the website.”
Also because of the pandemic, the last mission trip sponsored by the Diocese was in April 2019.
“At that time, during the follow up meetings, the Water Women told us how they were using the filters,” Mary said. “Then they requested help from the Diocese to start a bakery. They wanted to use clean water to make bread for the families. The proposal was approved in early 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic and the funding was sent. The bakery has been going for several months now.”
The bakery project, as well as the other mission activities, are coordinated with Pastoral Social Caritas (PASCAR), the charitable arm of the Archdiocese of Sucre in Bolivia. Jhonny Montero, PASCAR’s Director, will be joining us on this week’s Coffee Chat to talk about this and other projects.
