Supporting School Aged Children in Care

The Children's Commission will host a webinar on Friday, September 20, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. entitled “Supporting School Aged Children in Care.” The panel will explore the role of DFPS education specialists and how to best utilize them to ensure that the educational needs of child clients are met.  


Panelists will include the following DFPS Education Specialists:

  • Felicia Penn, State Office, moderator;
  • Jennifer Heimbach, Region 6B;
  • Kathy Thurman, Region 4; and
  • Keri Louviere, Region 5.


MCLE credit for this course is currently pending. This presentation will be archived and materials will be made available on the Children’s Commission website following the live webinar.

Allison Green, Legal Director at the National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC) and Kellie Price, Special Projects Attorney at the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) provided a high-level overview of several federal child welfare laws and analyzed related provisions in the Texas Family Code. The discussion focused on the overlap between these federal and state laws. 

 

The State Bar of Texas approved 1.5 hours of MCLE for the webinar, and the Texas Board of Legal Specialization approved 1.5 hours for certification in the specialty field of Child Welfare Law.
