Resource Letter:

For Judges and Attorneys Handling Child Welfare Cases

May 9, 2024

May is National Foster Care Month

May is National Foster Care Month, and to raise awareness this year, the federal Administration for Children and Families Children’s Bureau adopted a theme of Engaging Youth. Building Supports. Strengthening Opportunities. According to the Children’s Bureau, an estimated 18,500 youth exit foster care each year without a permanent family, and many exit care without receiving the services necessary to prepare them for adulthood and independent living.

The Children’s Bureau is partnering with the Capacity Building Center for States to host a virtual event on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 1 pm Central Time on Allying With Youth: Developing Life-long Relationships and Supportive Networks. This educational opportunity will discuss relational permanency and its crucial importance to young people who are preparing to age out of the child welfare system. Additionally, the Child Welfare Information Gateway shares many related resources and a National Foster Care Month Outreach Toolkit.

Below are educational resources that judges and attorneys can reference to provide support for the health and well-being of those involved in the child welfare system, and in particular for older youth in care.
