Meet the woman who started the Impact100 movement more than 20 years ago. Wendy Steele will share her personal journey of building one of today’s most powerful grassroots organizations and inspire us to continued growth and community transformation.

If you haven’t read it yet, be sure to pick up a copy of Wendy’s debut book, Invitation to Impact: Lighting the Path to Community Transformation. Part business book, part memoir, Invitation to Impact provides insights for catalyzing meaningful change by giving women a seat at the table and a chance to join the movement—or spark one within themselves.

Visioning

Supporting Nonprofits & Strengthening Grant Applications

New this year, a Visioning Team is available to meet with nonprofits considering an Impact100 Martin grant application. They may be first-time, previous, or future applicants. These voluntary sessions occur in November and December before the January letter of intent (LOI) deadline.

Our Visioning Team supports nonprofits by:

  • Exploring project ideas with organizations interested in applying for a grant
  • Clarifying grant guidelines and the application process
  • Helping identify possible collaborators for their project, if appropriate

The Team’s goal is to increase the quality and quantity of applications. Team members have in-depth grant experience, but they don’t review applications before submission or give advice on pending applications. Information that could impact the grant evaluation process won’t be shared with the Grants Committee. Once the grant application process has begun, the Visioning Team’s work is done.

How Visioning works:

  • A pair of team members meet with interested organizations in person for one hour. They will answer questions and offer unbiased feedback. They will not tell agencies what to do.
  • Nonprofits are encouraged to include a board member, grant writer, and the Executive Director in the meeting.

Help get the word out. This is the perfect time of year to encourage the nonprofits you support to learn more about Impact100 Martin grants. Even if they’re not quite ready to apply, they can benefit from:

  • Attending our annual Grant Workshop on November 2, 9:30 am, IRSC
  • Reviewing our Grant Guidelines and Grant FAQs.
  • Requesting a meeting with the Visioning Team (Visioning@impact100martin.org)

Exciting news from the Grants Committee:

Grant Writing Workshop

Nonprofits can learn about Impact100 Martin's grant application process by attending our annual Grant Workshop held in collaboration with The Community Foundation of Martin- St. Lucie (TCFMSL) at 9:30 am on November 2, 2023, at Indian River State College, Chastain Campus, Wolf High Technology Center. They can register and learn more here.

Visioning

The Impact100 Martin website has been updated with a link within the Grants tab to information regarding “Visioning”. If you know of an agency that has or has not applied for an Impact grant in the past, please share the resources of our Visioning Team. Together we can support the goal of increasing the quantity and quality of grant applications.

Quarterly Updates from 2023 Impact100 Martin Impact Grants

Grants Committee Co-Chairs Joan Gibbons and Kelly McIntyre have visited our three Impact Grant recipients for the second quarter updates and have tremendous news to share. The “ripple effect” for each project has led to greater-than-expected results! Our first site visit will be on October 26th, 4:30-5:30 pm at the Environmental Studies Center. Please register here.

Environmental Studies Center – Wet Lab Revitalization

The Environmental Studies Center Wet Lab has truly been transformed by the Impact100 Martin Grant funds! Register here for a site visit to See Your Impact – October 26th at 4:30 pm.

  • Air conditioning has been installed. Prior to the Impact100 Martin Grant, it was not air-conditioned.
  • Tanks have been replaced, added, or resurfaced, depending on necessity. Some of the tanks included are octopus, grass flats, mangroves, invertebrates, and touch tanks.
  • Composite wood viewing/teaching area for students to sit while receiving instruction is complete and ADA-compliant.
  • The flooring in the main student area has been restored to its original terrazzo. This brings back the history of the ESC.
  • Impact100 Grant also opened some other funding opportunities for the Environmental Studies Center.

Martin County PALS – Mobile PALS Truck

The Martin County Mobile PALS truck is nearly complete and ready to roll out to our communities!

  • They were able to purchase a new Freightliner truck with a warranty, instead of the original idea of a used truck with lots of miles.
  • The truck is outfitted with boxing fitness equipment, jump ropes, boxing gloves, battle ropes, jump boxes, and coaching equipment. Speakers are being added as well.
  • The exterior has been colorfully wrapped and has our Impact100 Martin logo.
  • They are working with the school board to offer a Mobile Leadership Boot Camp and a diversion program for youth with disciplinary issues.
  • Other funders have come forward to add a rollout awning.
  • The Mobile Truck begins going to communities in October 2023.

Martin County Education Foundation – Career Exploration Labs in Middle School

  • Teachers from each school were selected and trained and administrators met with the vendor providing the modules to gain a full understanding of the project.
  • Impact100 Martin Impact Grant allowed them to raise additional funding for the project. In doing so, they were able to expand the scope and reach of the project, resulting in ALL of the middle schools in the Martin County School District now providing a Career Exploration Lab.
  • Working with the individual High Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings for each feeder middle school, modules were developed that specifically customized each Middle School Lab.
  • Modules and storage containers were purchased, and installation is complete.
  • Martin County School District Career Exploration Labs were presented to colleagues from around the state by the Executive Director of the Education Foundation of Martin County Lisa Rhodes. What an amazing “ripple effect”!

Mistress of the Ritz by Melanie Benjamin, A captivating novel based on the story of the extraordinary real-life American woman who secretly worked for the French Resistance during World War II—while playing hostess to the invading Germans at the iconic Hôtel Ritz in Paris—from the New York Times bestselling author of The Aviator's Wife and The Swans of Fifth Avenue.

“No one writes of the complexities of women’s lives and loves like Melanie Benjamin. In Mistress of the Ritz, Benjamin brings wartime Paris brilliantly to life—and brings home the terrible dilemmas and moral conundrums forced upon occupied citizens by the war. Blanche Auzello is a martini-soaked flapper with a heart of steel. Benjamin’s fascinating story brings this forgotten heroine vividly to life without flinching from the high price paid by those who fought back against the Nazi scourge. Intense, illuminating, and ultimately inspiring!”—Elizabeth Letts, New York Times bestselling author of Finding Dorothy

If you want to meet new members with the shared interest of reading and discuss the book Mistress of the Ritz by Melanie Benjamin. Join our moderators Sue Whittington and Jill Preston on November 6th for our discussion. While this will be an informal gathering, we ask that you please read the book if you plan to attend. This will be held in a private home in the Summerfield community - the address will be sent to all who R.S.V.P. by November 3, 2023.

Kimberly Rosen is a licensed attorney in Florida and New York. After clerking for the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, she worked in litigation at Willkie Farr & Gallagher before leaving to devote her time to her family. Once her daughters reached school age, Kimberly decided to use her considerable experience to help nonprofits fulfill their missions.

Kimberly connected with the mission of Impact100 in 2020 and has served on the Grants and Events Committees. She currently serves as co-chair of the Events Committee and as Secretary to the Board.

Kimberly says she’s motivated by the Jewish values of “tikkun olam” and “tzedakah,” meaning the moral obligations of an individual to repair and improve the world and to give to charity. She was drawn to Impact100 because of its focus on meaningful and sustainable good works, as well as its all-female membership. As a longtime Girl Scout leader, Kimberly knows the value and importance of women coming together to drive change locally in the community.

Kimberly has also served on the Board of Temple Beit HaYam in Stuart, Florida, where she is currently an active member. She loves to read, travel, and spend time in New York City.
