Macaulay in Montpelier: Selected Drawings and Sketches at Vermont Arts Council
in Montpelier, Vermont through November 2
David Macaulay, Why the Chicken Crossed the Road, 1987.
The Spotlight Gallery at the Vermont Arts Council is showing "Macaulay in Montpelier: Selected Drawings and Sketches" until November 2. David Macaulay is a British-born illustrator and writer, whose books have sold over three million copies in the United States and have been translated into a dozen languages. The illustrations in "Macaulay in Montpelier" are preliminary sketches and finished art from eight of his books showing his extensive work process across more than twenty years. According to Macaulay, the featured works were "selected in the dark from hundreds of illustrations and at least five times as many sketches," representing "a tiny sliver of the vast amount of flotsam left in the wake of each book." Also at the Vermont Arts Council in the Sculpture Garden is "SiteTime", on view through fall 2019. This exhibition is a constantly evolving installation linked to the drying of cordwood. Both exhibitions show the progression of time and the hard work of artists to create their pieces. Vermont Arts Council is located at 136 State Street in Montpelier, Vermont and is open Monday⎻Friday 8:30 a.m.⎻5:00 p.m. For more information, please visit vermontartscouncil.org.

To Look and Look Again at Chazan Gallery at Wheeler
in Providence, Rhode Island through October 13
Peter Hocking, As Fire To The Sun no. 2, 2018.
Starting today, Chazan Gallery at Wheeler is showing "To Look and Look Again" until October 13. This two-person exhibition features the work of Sam Allerton Green and Peter Hocking, both prestigious artists whose work represents their perception of time and place. Green paints landscapes, capturing not only the scene he's painting but how he feels at the time of painting it. The result is a snapshot of a place alongside the experience of being there for hours to portray it. Hocking's current work depicts landscapes from his childhood home in Cheshire, Connecticut, where he returned to earlier this year to care for his mother. Each painting marks a melding of the physical landscape as it is now and Hocking's childhood memories of the place. Both artists have a complex relationship with time and place that their pieces share with the viewer. There will be an opening reception tonight from 5:00 p.m.⎻8:00 p.m. Chazan Gallery at Wheeler is located at 228 Angell Street in Providence, Rhode Island and is open Tuesday⎻Saturday 11:00 a.m.⎻4:00 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 p.m.⎻4:00 p.m. For more information, please visit chazangallery.org/exhibitions.
