IJC Voice

May 2024

Volume 14, Issue 05

Dear Miriam,

For this edition of the Voice, I’d like to hand the microphone over to Barbara Peloso, whose friendship with IJC spans decades.

On June 28, 1964, Loyola House commenced as an exclusively male, weekend retreat centre. Thankfully, low attendance quickly forced the Jesuits to rethink their modus operandi. It became apparent that excluding half the population was neither good business nor fair play. Loyola House soon opened up to women, and the welcome hasn’t stopped expanding. Today people of all kinds seeking peace, consolation, and connection with Spirit and nature find themselves at home here.

Greg with Barbara Peloso

Barbara writes this:

"I first came to Loyola House by way of my husband Peter (now deceased). I became part of the early Christian Life Community (CLC), established by John English SJ and Peter. My involvement with Loyola continued in various forms after that. I was trained to be a spiritual director and became a guest director for a number of years. Peter and I worked on the Ecology Project team headed by Jim Profit SJ. Our team developed and led an 8-day ecology retreat for several years. Wonderful memories abound from that time.

I also joined the board (in its development) and eventually became Chair of the IJC board for a number of years. I think in total I was on the board for about 16 years in its various forms. This was a challenging, but very enriching time for me. I am eternally grateful for this opportunity. The people I met over the years filled my life with a richness that I honour to this day.

I have also made many retreats…. mostly 8-day… another one coming up this summer /24!!!

To say that Loyola House and IJC changed my life is an understatement. It has transformed, enriched and enlivened my life. I CANNOT imagine where I would be today without the wonder, people, friends and experiences I have had because of my time there.

I am, and will always, be immensely grateful for the life of our Sacred Jewel on the edge of Guelph."

Grateful are we for all our friends, whose transformations continue to enrich and enliven the growing life of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre.

Blessings,

Greg Kennedy

"It is in solitude that we discover that being is more important than having and that we are worth more than the results of our efforts.

In solitude we discover that our life is not a possession to be defended but a gift to be shared."
