If Mama's Happy, we're Happy!

Mothers have a profound impact on our lives and across all species, there is nothing like a mother’s love. I am often reminded of this when I meet mama dogs at shelters.

An adoption journey can be a tough and uncertain road alone and is even more so for a mama dog with a litter of pups that needs safety and food. And if you think dogs can’t count, try leaving one puppy behind. When we bring a mama dog in to our program, she is always careful to count her puppies as we move them from a shelter to our transport van, then into the foster home we've secured. Even once safe and settled into their foster homes, mamas care for their pups before they care for themselves. Sticking close by with all pups in their sight, they will begin to trust their foster family for food, short walks and eventually share the love of their puppies.

As much as these mama dogs love their pups, they blossom in a home of their own. A place where they can thrive and be a loved family member. As they wean their pups and leave a life of stress and uncertainty behind, their focus shifts from survival mode to becoming a loved family member with a life of comfort and security. From those who first provide care at our partner shelters, to the foster families and volunteers facilitating adoptions, each step of the adoption journey contributes to the heartwarming moment when a mother dog can finally rest, knowing she and her puppies are safe.

In honor of Mother's Day, help us help dogs, particularly mama dogs, get rescued, raise the last of their puppies and find a forever home of their very own. In the spirit of maternal care and love, we'll name a Saving Grace dog after your mom for a dedicated donation of $250 or more.

Meet Nina

We don't know how she wound up in a rural shelter. She appeared to be a purebred doberman pinsher, thin and dull coated, but gentle and friendly with people and dogs. When we got her back to Saving Grace, we named her Nina. She received the usual medical check, preventative medication and vaccinations, but her test came back positive for heartworm. It wasn't her fault. Though it's a preventable disease, more than a million pets in the U.S. have heartworm, so Nina is not alone.

Saving Grace has a unique approach to ensure dogs like Nina get the help they need in three important ways:

  1. Sponsorship: Kudos to Sierra Structures for stepping up to cover Nina's treatment! Representative Lindsay Creech came out to the farm and give Nina the good news. We are so grateful for our sponsors.
  2. Treatment: We began her treatment and sought an adopter in parallel.
  3. Foster to Adopt Program: It wasn't long before this dear dog had an admirer who wanted to take her home and care for her as a foster with the intent to adopt as soon as treatment was complete. As soon as she got a green light on her final health check, Nina went home with her new fur-ever family.

Nina is now in a loving home with her new mom and four furry siblings. With two Chihuahuas, a Doberman and a Rottweiler, it’s an unlikely pack but she has settled in and is doing well. A big win for Nina, Sierra Structures, Nina's new family AND the next dog we can now take in at Saving Grace!
