La Gonâve Haiti Partners 2023 Conference will be held at St. Philip’s July

connection with our world mission partner as we work together to forge ahead
despite the shadows of violence, economic despair, and political unrest in
Haiti. The $75 registration fee includes the Legacy Fund Reception (held at
the French Quarter Inn) on Thursday evening, light breakfast and lunch on
Friday and Saturday, plus dinner and networking on Friday evening. Conference
materials are also included. Learn more and register at the link below!
Handmade jewelry and other goods from Beatitudes, Inc., a faith-based non-profit organization, will be available for purchase during the conference and on July 30 before and after church in the Parish Hall. Beatitudes was formed originally to partner with the Pwoje Fanm women’s vocational program on the island of La Gonâve in 2003 as an offshoot of the Haiti ministry of a church in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Life Imitates Art?
St. Philip’s Connection to Bazriel and the Frozen Bells of Noël
| |
Earlier this month, Jesus Street Press of Charleston released Bazriel and the Frozen Bells of Noël, an angelic adventure into France during the time of the Impressionist painters. Written by St. Philippian Pringle Franklin, the hardcover book features 95 pictures from famous artists that represent the book’s two settings of Heaven and France in 1890. Monet, Renoir, Rembrandt, Pissarro, Cézanne, and Sisley are among the featured artists.
And St. Philip’s has found its way into the tale! In a note across from a full-page image of the striking oil painting by Charles DuPre DeAntonio, Franklin relates a curious connection between the bells of St. Nicolas Church in the story and those in our belfry:
In an odd note of synchronicity, while I was creating my story about frozen church bells in France, the bronze beauties in the belfry of my home church were struck dumb. In June 2021, a wicked fork of lightning zapped the steeple of historic St. Philip’s Church (Anglican) in downtown Charleston. The wiring that controls the four bells was fried. From the biggest sister, with her robust figure of 1,102 pounds, to the tiniest girl, with her dainty 230-pound form, not one of the bells could ring.

The Mnemonic Device That Will Help You Live Out Romans 8:13 | |
The Rev. Justin Hare’s July 16 sermon closely examined St. Paul’s message to the Romans: “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” He offered a mnemonic device he’s found helpful, one he learned from his college minister––the acronym ANTHEM:
A: Avoid. Avoid the situations and scenarios when your flesh rears its ugly head. Be aware of the patterns and places where it does that.
N: No. Ferociously say no. Be ready for sin and adamantly opposed to it.
T: Turn. Turn your mind from the promise of temptation to a superior promise in the Gospel. Know the promises of Jesus.
H: Hold. Don’t give up. Hold the line; hold the promises of God before your eyes.
E: Enjoy. Enjoy the superior satisfaction found in God alone.
M: Move. Move into action. Use your gifts and find a work that gives glory to God.

Windsor the part-time office helper packed a lot into her visit last week: she inspected the new production printer, oversaw salary negotiations between finance administrator Juli Garland and sexton-in-training Cecilia Walchesky (who happens to be Windsor's housemate), and got St. Philip's new Threads account set up.
Oh, you don't know what Threads is? That's ok––it seems like no one really does, and Windsor clocked out before she could tell us.
So how about we learn together? Download the Threads app for iPhone or Android and give St. Philip's a follow! And if you're not already following us on Facebook and Instagram, click the links below so that you can be among the first to hear about upcoming events, schedule changes, and the comings and goings of our part-time office helpers (since they will probably show up more there than on Threads...maybe?).

Collect for Sunday:
Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion, we beseech thee, upon our infirmities, and those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, mercifully give us for the worthiness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Readings for Sunday:
- Romans 8:18–25
- Psalm 86
