Stony Brook's Division of Student Affairs was recognized with three silver awards from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). Every year, NASPA highlights distinguished student affairs programs for "contributions and impact on the field." Career Communities, Far Beyond Campus and the Center for Civic Justice were the programs recognized. "I am so proud of the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook for being recognized on the national level for their outstanding work," said Dr. Richard Gatteau, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. The 27th Street Tobacco and Wireless shop was not a good neighbor. The shop was the reason for more than 400 calls to police over two years. Yet, a loophole in Wisconsin law made it nearly impossible to revoke the licenses of standalone tobacco shops. But thanks to collaborative lobbying by several major neighborhood stakeholders, including Marquette and MillerCoors, the law was changed in 2016. And it is an example of how Marquette, through its innovative Center for Peacemaking, tries to live out its mission of service to the local community in an unusual public-private partnership of community engagement. The weeklong, residential experience will immerse students in the theory and practice of journalism. Participants will explore relevant issues facing American journalists today and develop skills by covering a variety of news events throughout the Bozeman area. In the application, students will be asked to identify important issues in their communities and recognize how the media covers them. They will also be asked what stories have not been covered and how the community would benefit if the rest of the world knew more about these issues. Students must also submit photographs of important locations in their towns. The Western News
