Student Spotlight

During the first week of Advisory class each month, the students have lessons and activities that focus on the monthly character trait. At the end of the month, staff nominates and votes for students at each grade level that are role models for that character trait. The October character trait was Resect, and on Tuesday, November 14, we recognized the ISNP Student Spotlight winners for October.

At ISNP respect includes accepting others and their differences, dealing peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements, and exercising the Golden Rule. Respect in relationships builds feelings of trust, safety, and wellbeing. It includes self-respect, along with respect for others, your elders, the community and property.

Congratulations to these students for being recognized for their exemplary behavior as it relates to Respect! Thank you and keep up the good work!

Left to Right: Chaunce Ho (8th grade), Oliver Spaulding (6th grade), Charlotte Eisenhower (6th grade), Peyton Rassbach (9th grade), Cristofh Aurelio (9th grade), Dominic Parla (7th grade), Maggie Gordon (10th grade), Sophie Brown (10th grade), Gianna Van (8th grade), Karla Del Toro (11th grade), and Naima Phillip (12th grade). Not pictured: Madison Parks (7th grade), Wyatt Prince (11th grade), and Niko Zarbano (12th grade).

The November character trait is Responsibility. Be on the lookout for the announcement of those winners after we return from Thanksgiving break!

In The Classrooms

From Mrs. Gillispie, Middle School Guidance

Last week, our 6th grade advisory classes celebrated Veterans Day by participating in Storytime with a Service Member. This event is sponsored by the United Through Reading non-profit organization. Storytime with a Service Member allows teachers and students to choose from a list of books that are read by service members from the various branches of the military. A few of the stories that were read to our students were "Make a Friend Pout-Pout Fish", "Bruce's Big Move" and Dad Left with Mr. Army". Our students enjoyed watching and listening to these stories.

From Ms. Scarlett, Spanish

Last week in Spanish 1, we focused on infinitives. This is a big step for students because it is the first step of verb conjugation. Introducing the traditional Salvadoran dish, pupusas, was an engaging and educational way to enhance the learning experience. Pupusas are thick corn tortillas that can be stuffed with a variety of fillings, including various meats, refried beans, cheese, and even squash flowers. Through these lessons, students not only learn about infinitives in the context of food preparation, but they also gain insight into the rich cultural heritage of El Salvador!

The activity involves a brief introduction to pupusas, their ingredients, and the process of making them, all while reinforcing the use of infinitives in Spanish. It is a hands-on experience for the students, providing a practical application of the language skills they are acquiring. For the final step of the lesson, I provided pupusas from Bitia's Taquera for the students to enjoy! Below are a few photos that give an idea of what pupusas look like.

From Dr. Evans, 6th Grade Science

My students have been exploring natural objects that exist outside the Earth's atmosphere. Recently, they studied the moon and its phases along with its many other characteristics. Of course, what study of the moon would be complete without learning about astronauts and spaceships?! As we capped off our lesson on the moon, students were given the opportunity to create rockets and to attempt to launch them! They used different substances and materials to build their rockets and used data to hypothesize the distance they would travel, and then -- BLASTOFF! They were pleasantly surprised when their makeshift rockets took off into orbit!

From Mr. Horin, High School Science

Students in my Animal Science class would like to showcase what they have done so far this year and share some of their plans for the remainder of the school year. We started with 15 new chicks at the beginning of school including, Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, Bielefelder and Mottled Houdan Polish. The students will be transitioning the feeding from starter/grower to egg layer feed by the start of the first week after Thanksgiving break. The class is looking forward to seeing the egg production take place in the coming weeks! We are hoping for unique egg colorations that we can crossbreed next school year.

The rabbits we have raised from the two previous school years will be going into a breeding program after the new year. We currently have a mixed breed of rabbits that are Californian, New Zealand and Rex breeds. The buck we will be using is a mix of Californian and New Zealand, while the two does are Californian, New Zealand and Rex crosses. The kits produced should be a large breed with various colorations associated with the various rabbit varieties.

Mr. Baumgartner, High School Science

Compare, contrast, identify, classify, critically think, write, edit and peer review all in one place -- dichotomous keys. That's what the students in my classes have been up to. Students are learning about the classification and taxonomy of marine organisms including sharks, common invertebrates, and Florida reef fish. They have been building the skills and knowledge necessary to make their very own dichotomous keys which are used to classify and identify specific species of organisms. Students have learned the different parts, body shapes and markings of fish in reef environments.

After Thanksgiving break, students will continue building on this knowledge as they compare body shapes, markings and coloration schemes to individual fish behaviors. By the end of the unit, students will have written an essay on fish behaviors and be able to look at any fish and describe what ecosystems they live in and what feeding behaviors they exhibit.

From Mr. Tollar, 7th Grade Science

During Thanksgiving break, I am asking students to explore outside and take some time to become more aware of local plants and animals. I have asked them to take photographs of 10 plants or animals for this project, keeping their distance from animals considered dangerous, of course. This will be for extra credit, and students who travel are able to submit photos from the area(s) they visited. Attached is a picture that a student sent me in the past of an animal that they observed in the wild. They say many of these reside in Gainesville!

Mrs. Boucher, High School Biology

Last week, students in my Biology class learned about the cell cycle and cell division, also called mitosis. In order to practice and review the process of mitosis, students were supplied with magnetic pop beads that represent chromosomes.

We discussed the stages of the cell cycle starting at the duplication of chromosomes all the way through the process of mitosis. While reviewing the steps, students manipulated their pop bead chromosomes around the tables to model the way the chromosomes move throughout the cell.

2023 ISNP K-12 Fall Harvest Festival

The ISNP Student Government would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us in celebrating at our Fall Harvest Festival on Friday, November 10. It was amazing to see so many of our families, teachers, and students joining together to play games, enjoy music, and support our clubs.

From the seniors' coffee booth to the E-Sports video gaming station, from the 9th grade pumpkin painting to the middle school water balloon fight, engaging activities were offered for families to come together and have some fun. We appreciate all of you and are grateful that we have such commitment and participation from our school community!

In Sports This Week...

Girls Varsity Soccer

On Tuesday, November 14, the Lady Sharks showed a dominating performance against the Port Charlotte Pirates coming away with a 6-0 win! Goals were scored by Addy Rattai (2), Hannah Goncalves (2), Mallory Gordon (1), and Bridghet Wood (1).

Middle School Boys Basketball

On Monday, November 13, the Middle School Sharks Boys Basketball team triumphed over the Imagine School of North Manatee (ISNM) with a 26-15 victory. Demonstrating solid teamwork and effective defense, the sharks took an early lead and maintained control throughout the game. The Sharks' cohesive play and strategic offense secured the win. Tim Koshman lead all scoring with 14 points, and James Houseman secured 6 rebounds in just two quarters.
