A Tour of the Indian River Colony Club

A couple of weekends ago, I, along with a few colleagues, were invited to experience the golf course and see what the community is about. The first thing that I noticed after passing through the security gate at the entrance was how beautifully kept everything is. The lawns are pristine, the homes, the clubhouse, everything. I should not have been surprised as this is what military people do. Keep things in order.

I met our host, Kent Davenport, at the Pro Shop, and we talked about the community and the amenities available for residents. The Club is owned by its members, and all amenities, corporate buildings, and grounds are debt free. I guess they keep the politicians away.

By now, you must be wondering what all can you do at Indian River Colony Club. That would be a long list, which promises something for everyone. In addition to a great golf course, there is tennis, croquet, bocce, a swimming pool, social activities, a fitness center and dining.

When career military people retire and embark on the second chapter of their working lives, they often choose jobs that connect somewhat with previous assignments. The case was different for retired Col. Lee Wyatt III, who opted for the world of a disc jockey.

The Indian River Colony Club resident is in high demand for the musical acumen he imparts through Lee’s Riots Dancin’ Machine, the DJ business he and wife Patricia operate. Oh, Colonel DJ is also a whiz at line dancing, which he teaches at IRCC as well as at Faith Viera Lutheran Church.

So how does an Army colonel with a Ph.D. in history become a DJ/dance master? It’s a long story.

Florida's Space Coast - Great American Defense Communities

Did you know that the Space Coast is one of just five recently named Great American Defense Communities for 2022? According to the April 6 press release from Washington, D.C. –

Florida’s Space Coast, home to Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, is one of five communities across the country named to the 2022 Class of Great American Defense Communities.

The Association of Defense Communities (ADC) announced the five selected communities in conjunction with USAA, the program’s official sponsor at the Defense Communities National Summit earlier this month. The 2022 class also includes West Valley Partners, Ariz., Tullahoma, Tenn., Antelope Valley, Calif., and Northern Virginia.

“Our military needs America’s defense communities to support them,” ADC President Bob Ross said. “We selected Florida’s Space Coast because they are a region that consistently goes above and beyond to support service members, veterans, and military families living in their community.”

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Melbourne #4 in The 10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S. in 2021-2022:
