While often undervalued and rarely celebrated, Black women have been holding this country down since its formation and continue to lead across industries often with less visibility than their white counterparts, and with little to no accolades. But Black women have been at the center (and behind the scenes) of every movement, artistic and social. So it’s no surprise that their leadership is often sought after, even while their work is diminished and their ideas co-opted. As we navigate the non-profit arts sector in the midst of a crisis – a pandemic which has exacerbated the racial inequities cemented over centuries and the subsequent social unrest brewing for decades – let’s look to the collective wisdom of Black women to teach us a few things about resilience and reinvention.
