Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembrance
Wednesday, August 9, 6:30 PM
Friends Center for Racial Justice
People around the world in August, pause to remember the dropping of the first atomic bombs in 1945 on Hiroshima August 6, and Nagasaki, August 9.
In Ithaca, the Remembrance has been in the form of a collaborative, silent vigil around the peace pole at Friends Center for Racial Justice (FCRJ), 227 N. Willard Way, Ithaca.
This year as people reconnect, face-to-face since covid, FCRJ invites you to join us as we join with others throughout the world for a time of mindfulness and remembrance of the thousands of people who were killed 78 years ago at the moment of the blasts, those who later died from their injuries, and those who suffered from their injuries.
Please join us, rain or shine, as we gather around the peace pole at 6:30 pm. If we have inclement weather, our backup plans are to move inside. All are welcome.
If you have questions, please contact one of the following:

Meeting for Worship with Attention to Earthcare
Sunday, August 20, 9-10 am
via Zoom
The Earthcare Committee is inviting Ithaca Monthly Meeting to a worship sharing session on Sunday, August 20, to consider the Quaker concept of “unity with nature.” This will be held via zoom from 9 to 10 am, to allow people to get to Meeting for Worship at 10:30.
The interconnected queries are:
- How can we create a more spiritual connection to Earth?
-
How can we better make our faith our practice?
Our committee hopes that this "Meeting for Worship with Attention to Earthcare" (and later sessions if we feel so led) will help us discern how best we, as a meeting, can use our shared gifts to address the challenges facing all life on Planet Earth.

August Workshop: Beyond Permaculture
Thursday, August 10 at 7pm Eastern
presented by permaculture educator Carol Barta
From Carol: Permaculture is said to be “the art of designing beneficial relationships.” Permaculture is a design science rooted in the observation of natural systems, the wisdom of traditional farming methods, and systems thinking. It uses ancient wisdom and modern scientific and technical knowledge to create sustainable habitats for humans and others.
Permaculture and the Quaker faith share a number of commonalities. In this workshop, we will explore how permaculture ethics and design principles can weave together with Quaker principles and testimonies to enable communities around us to thrive.
