IIVS at SOT 2018: Spotlight on Respiratory Toxicology
To highlight our expanding commitment and capabilities in in vitro respiratory toxicology, IIVS is sponsoring and taking part in several events and activities at the Society of Toxicology (SOT) annual meeting. These events are designed to take a critical look at the utility of in vitro approaches to assess respiratory toxicants from chemicals and pesticides to next-generation tobacco products. Each meeting, session and roundtable provides a platform to discuss these approaches and share ideas on how to strengthen the use of these methodologies.

We will kick off the week with an Ancillary Meeting on Monday evening to discuss cross-sector efforts to identify and standardize non-animal approaches for respiratory toxicology. On Tuesday, we will co-chair a roundtable session to explore the opportunities and challenges in using in vitro and other alternative testing methods to evaluate e-cigarettes. Ending the week, on Thursday, our symposium will bring together speakers from industry and government to focus on how a range of pulmonary exposures can be evaluated using in vitro methods for detecting local respiratory effects, and the steps necessary to standardize these test methods.

In addition to our sessions and posters, we invite you to visit our booth (#533) to talk with us and learn more about our respiratory toxicology program.

IIVS Names Frank Gerberick as Chief Scientific Advisor
IIVS has appointed Frank Gerberick, Ph.D as its Chief Scientific Advisor. With his expertise and knowledge of technological advances and industry trends, Dr. Geberick will advise the organization's governing body on scientific matters and make recommendations on future directions, such as unique research opportunities, processes to promote efficiencies, and competitive positioning for the organization.

“In the current business and regulatory climate, we see the value in establishing an independent advisory role to guide us on making scientific decisions. There is no one better than Dr. Gerberick to serve in that role with his long and accomplished career in developing and promoting alternative test methods.” said IIVS President, Erin Hill.
IIVS to Present at Upcoming Spring Meetings
Watch for the IIVS team to be presenting at several upcoming meetings, including:

On Friday, April 6, 2018, IIVS scientist, Emilia Costin, Ph.D, will participate in a one-day workshop - Re-envisioning NLM’s Toxicology and Environmental Health Resources - to help the National Library of Medicine (NLM) revise its toxicology and environmental health resources.

IIVS Principal Scientist, Holger Behrsing, Ph.D, will present at the following upcoming events:

On April 26-27, he will be at CropLife America in Crystal City, VA. Dr. Behrsing will explore in vitro assays and current approaches in inhalation evaluation as part of a session, Novel Approaches for Evaluating and Assessing Inhalation Risk.

In June, Dr. Behrsing will attend the Society for In Vitro Biology meeting to present: Pragmatic Use of State-of-the-Art Lung Models to Evaluate Exposure-induced, Adverse Pulmonary Effects. The presentation will provide an overview of in vitro/ ex vivo pulmonary models, and how they can be incorporated into a screening/testing strategy.
Save the Date for the ASCCT 7th Annual Meeting: Sept. 11-12
The 7th Annual ASCCT Meeting - Predictive Toxicology: Strategies for Implementing New Approaches - will be held September 11-12 at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

The program will include expert plenary lectures given by:

  • Brian Berridge, Associate Director, National Toxicology Program: Building Biological Bridges: Facilitating the Predictive Toxicology Paradigm

  • Suzanne Fitzpatrick, FDA: Predictive Toxicology for Regulatory Decisions: Implementing New Approaches at FDA

The meeting will also include a panel discussion on public-private partnerships, poster and oral presentations, a social reception and networking event, and a mentoring activity and awards for young scientists.

Watch for more information about abstracts and registration.
