Use of Specialty Drugs for Advanced Prostate Cancer and Hospital Participation in the 340B Drug Pricing Program

An IHPI and Rogel Cancer Center team led by Kassem Faraj, M.D., and Vahakn Shahinian, M.D., M.S., examined the association between hospital participation in the 340B Drug Pricing Program and the use of oral specialty drugs to treat advanced prostate cancer. The researchers found that men taking oral specialty drugs had similar overall adherence whether they were treated at a 340B- or non-340B hospital. However, patients from highly vulnerable communities were more likely to continue treatment if they received their care at a 340B hospital. This brief outlines health policy and practice implications of these findings.

Money on their minds: Health-related costs top older adults’ concerns for people their age

A new U-M National Poll on Healthy Aging report examines older adults' level of concern about 26 different health-related topics for people over 50 in their community. The top three issues about which respondents were very concerned were medical care expenses (56%), the cost of long-term care (56%), and prescription medication costs (54%).

Lynda Lisabeth, Ph.D., M.P.H., professor of public health, and Lewis Morgenstern, M.D., professor of neurology, received a $5 million grant that will provide additional funding support for their ongoing work examining stroke health disparities in Mexican Americans.

a national authority in measuring and improving the quality of cancer care delivery, has been named the next vice provost for academic and faculty affairs in the Office of

the Provost. The Board of Regents approved his five-year appointment, effective June 1.

Goldstick to receive U-M Research Faculty Achievement Award

Jason Goldstick, Ph.D., research associate professor of emergency medicine, is among six U-M research faculty who will be honored by the Office of the Vice President for Research this fall. He will receive the Research Faculty Achievement Award in recognition of his significant research contributions and leadership in the field of firearm injury and prevention.
