MARCH

IHM Patron: St. Joseph

IHM Virtue: Love of the Cross

Scripture: "Anyone who will come after Me must take up the cross and follow Me." (Matt 16:24).

"When you come before the Lord, talk to Him if you can. If you can't, just stay there, let yourself be seen. Don't try too hard to do anything else." St. Francis de Sales

The Desert

Father, You called your Son

Into the desert.

Such loneliness must have

Been difficult for Him.

Yet, He went beyond the

Towns and villages

To be alone with You.

I too, Lord must go to my

Desert place

To learn that loneliness

Is distancing.

Here is where I find that

"Love" abides,

In the silent stillness of

My heart.

I stop, listen, ponder

And learn,

That You God are the

"Alone,"

That only in Your solitude

Can I find "Love,"

Only in Your "Love,"

Can I find peace.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

1st Theme of Catholic Social Teaching:

The Life and Dignity of Every Human Person

by Sister Joyce C. Bell, IHM

Catholic Social Teaching is derived from the belief that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and therefore possesses an inherent dignity that makes each person’s life valuable and worthy of respect as a member of the human family. From the moment of conception to natural death, each person has a right to life consistent with this dignity that comes from God and not from any human quality or accomplishment. (adapted from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops\USCCB).

The 1st Theme of Catholic Social Teaching embraces this concept. It is the bedrock upon which each subsequent theme is built. Every time we ask the question: “Does this action uplift human life or degrade human life?” we are living Catholic Social Teaching. Every time we form an opinion of a policy or person based on this same question, we are informing our lives through Catholic Social Teaching. Every time we challenge a person’s words or a policy that is inconsistent with this belief, we are practicing Catholic Social Teaching. Issues such as abortion, the death penalty, immigration, poverty, racism, persons with disabilities, ageism and war, just to name a few, beg to be examined through the lens of the dignity of the human person. We may find we need further education and an adjustment in our faith perspective on one or more of these issues. This is a life-long faith journey.

Welcome to the challenge of living our Catholic faith. Please view this video to learn more about Theme 1 of Catholic Social Teaching: The Life and Dignity of the Human Person
