Dear IEA Members and Friends -

Where did September go? And the warm weather?

It seems like the school year started in a flash and IEA season along with it. Hard to believe we are already two months into what is proving to be a large and very exciting 21st IEA season. Over 100 horse shows have already taken place with hundreds more on the schedule this fall and winter.

With the month of October starting this weekend, we encourage those teams and riders who may still need to finish up their applications to get those done quickly in order to have your memberships activated and READY TO SHOW! About 98% of returning teams have already renewed for this season which is wonderful. We've also welcomed 129 NEW TEAMS so far. It is definitely not too late to join in the fun! Fall is the perfect time to show IEA.

There is always something happening with IEA or information to be shared. Please follow IEA on your favorite social media platform @rideiea for the most up-to-date announcements, videos, reminders, and re-caps. We love it when you tag us in your photos with #rideiea so we can see them and celebrate your successes with the IEA community. Social media is also a great way to learn more about your Youth Board reps and share IEA with other barn friends.

Per usual, there is a lot of information and upcoming events to highlight in this newsletter. Thank you for being an important part of our IEA family. We wish you the best of luck this season.

Best Wishes,

The IEA Staff and Board of Directors

IEA ADULT PILOT PROGRAM CLASSES ARE HAPPENING!

IEA has created a webpage for the ADULT PILOT PROGRAM under the Opportunities tab that lists potential shows that are planning on hosting adult classes.

https://www.rideiea.org/opportunities/adult-pilot-program/

This webpage will also house the results of adult rider points for each discipline zone/region as well as other information pertaining to the Adult Pilot Program.

Interested in including ADULT CLASSES at your IEA show?

Please reach out to Emily David emily@rideiea.org to be included on the list.

Interested in participating in the ADULT PILOT PROGRAM as a RIDER?

Check out the map of teams that are in your area or reach out to coaches near you about participating on their team. Teams will be added to the map as they let us know they plan to participate in this program.

Please note As this is the first year of the Pilot Program, there may or may not be available Adult shows/classes in your area. As interest grows, more shows will be added. We are overwhelmed with the enthusiasm for this program and look forward to developing it with you.

Pillar 1: Building stability in the saddle

Ifa Simmonds, creator of The Equestrian Fitness Academy shares an important rider fitness tip for building stability in the saddle!

How’s your core stability?

Do you ever have hip, knee or shoulder pain? Common rider physical weaknesses stem from a lack of core stiffness and stability. The core is the baseline for our body’s movement and communication in the saddle. A lack of functional core strength causes tired and strained muscles that add extra stress to the body that lead to an overuse sports injury.

The best way to avoid an injury.

Make sure your rider fitness program starts with stability training. The first 4 weeks of your training should involve many different movements and exercises that challenge and build your total body stabilization. What’s stability training? Systematic exercises that challenge and improve your awareness, strength and balance.

Not sure where to start? For more info and exercises to build your core and stability Download the Essential Core Training Guide.  Visit www.ifafit.com for more info.

IEA MEMBERS: How many of you have ACTUALLY READ THROUGH the IEA RULE BOOK this season?

The IEA 2022-2023 RULE BOOK is AVAILABLE online HERE.

Rule changes can be found highlighted in green throughout the rule book.

OCTOBER CHALLENGE: Take one hour over the next month to familiarize yourself with the IEA Rulebook. It will make you a more successful coach, rider, show host and IEA parent to understand what to expect at IEA shows, help your team avoid costly mistakes, and what tests judges may ask of you. (Hint: Sometimes the judge may ask a question directly from the rulebook!)

WESTERN MEMBERS: Last season the Western Committee released a new Western Judges Guidebook that carefully outlines western class penalties and what judges are looking for in Western patterns and rail work. This is an extremely useful guide in understanding penalty points and what to avoid when showing in IEA Western classes. Check it out HERE.

RE: SAFETY VESTS

IEA acknowledges that the use of personal safety equipment and gear, including air vests and safety vests with air canisters, is the personal choice of each participant. By making application for membership, participants acknowledge that IEA does not assume responsibility for the function or malfunction of safety equipment and that in certain instances safety equipment and the use thereof may present a risk of harm to the participant, the animals and other riders. The possible malfunction of safety equipment, one’s own equipment or another rider’s equipment, constitutes an inherent risk of the sport and as such is included in waivers signed by all members and parents/guardians of minors.
