presidentUPDATE FROM THE IALD EDUCATION TRUST PRESIDENT

By Dawn Hollingsworth, IALD

Dawn Hollingsworth, IALD
DAWN HOLLINGSWORTH, IALD

Closing out the year by reflecting on the work of the IALD Education Trust in 2013 is both exciting and bittersweet, the latter because the year's end will also mark the end of my time on the IALD Education Trust Board of Directors.

IALD EDUCATION TRUST SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The IALD Education Trust Scholarship Fund was established thanks to generous contributions. In 2011, Dan Gelman, Lighting Services, Inc., and LSI employees donated over $20,000 USD in the name of Dan's late father, Marvin. This money allowed the IALD Education Trust Board of Directors to establish a general scholarship fund for the IALD Education Trust, helping us award additional scholarship money since 2011.

This year, the IALD Education Trust Scholarship Fund was greatly enhanced by donations in memory of Candace M. Kling, FIALD, who passed away earlier this year. David Ghatan, IALD, and CM Kling & Associates have donated more than $10,000 USD in Candy's honor, allowing us to continue growing the general scholarship fund while awarding new scholarships in 2014.

Individual donations directed toward this fund are greatly appreciated and will be acknowledged on the IALD Education Trust web site. Please consider making a donation to the IALD Education Trust during this holiday season or when you pay your 2014 dues.

We'd also like to recognize the continued support of Steven Rosen, IALDChip Israel, FIALD; and Ron Naus, B-K Lighting + Teka Illumination, who fund scholarships year after year.

LIGHTPLAY AT ENLIGHTEN AMERICAS 2013

Student participation at Enlighten Americas isn't limited to LightPlay, but this activity is one of our most visible. This is an exciting opportunity for student attendees to express creativity, network with professionals and help raise money for the IALD Education Trust. Our most successful LightPlay to-date was held in 2013.

Thanks again to the following individuals and companies for pledging donations to the IALD Education Trust during Enlighten Americas 2013:

REQUESTS FOR FUNDING

Rocky Mountain Lighting Academy

Beginning with our wildly successful grant to The Pennsylvania State University for its Project CANDLE initiative, the IALD Education Trust has supported the creation of a masters program at the University of Oklahoma and the Rocky Mountain Lighting Academy at the University of Colorado.

Our mission is to continue to support academic programs to strengthen lighting design curriculum and education of students in the art and science of lighting design. This year, we established specific funding criteria to make sure the money entrusted to us is used for the greatest benefit. We are grateful for the efforts of Jimalee Beno, Peerless Lighting, and Joe Bokelman, Eaton's Cooper Lighting Business, for researching and writing the criteria that was adopted by the Board earlier this year.

Further work was done this year by our Request for Funding Committee, comprised of Larry French, FIALD; Eileen Thomas, IALD; Jimalee Beno; Mark Sieber, ERCO Lighting; and Dr. Laura Prestwood, Educator IALD, in evaluating requests received. We are grateful for their efforts on this important committee.

INTERNSHIP COMITTEE

The Internship Committee is comprised of Jim Baney, IALD; Patrick McGee, Associate IALD; and Faith Baum, IALD. A survey was sent out to IALD members to collect feedback on what is important to the Internship Program and how it can be revitalized to help young designers gain valuable work experience. Thank you to all who completed the survey.

AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

Moving into 2014, the Ambassador Program will continue to be an important initiative of the IALD Education Trust. The outreach of design professionals to academic programs worldwide results in critical engagement for both students and educators. We extend a huge thanks to Kathy Abernathy, FIALD, and John Martin, IALD, for their management of the program. We also want to thank our many members who have served as Ambassadors. If you are interested in getting involved, please visit iald.me/trustambassadors for more information on how to participate.

FINANCIAL PLANNING

Each year, the IALD Education Trust relies on fundraising to support our programs. Over the past several years, we have also embarked upon sound financial planning during our annual budgeting process. In doing so, we have developed financial tools to ensure your donations are managed to benefit the longevity of the organization. We have established reserve accounts to insure the commitments we make can be fulfilled. We have also developed policies and procedures to allow our ability to support our mission to grow over the long term.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

The IALD Education Trust has an exciting future ahead. In July 2013, the IALD Education Trust Board of Directors joined the IALD Board of Directors at their bi-annual strategic planning session to discuss future growth initiatives. We look forward to expanding student activities across the globe in 2014. Earth is a big planet; we believe it should have better lighting.

LAST REFLECTIONS

Although my time on the IALD Education Trust Board is coming to an end, I will remain committed to its mission. When I joined the Board seven years ago, I had no idea what I was really getting into. Over this time, I have grown and loved working with everyone who has given their passion, money and time to help us make an impact on lighting education.

As IALD Education Trust President for the past two years, I am personally grateful for the support of the IALD Education Trust Board. They have dedicated time and resources, and have followed my lead even when we weren't sure where we were going. I have truly enjoyed serving with Jimalee Beno; Lara Cordell, Wiedenbach Brown; Andrea Hartranft, IALD; Peter Raynham, Educator IALD; Steven Rosen, IALD; Mark Sieber; Kevin Theobald, IALD; and Ron Naus, B-K Lighting + Teka Illumination, who inherits the presidential torch on 1 January 2014. I am also incredibly appreciative of the leadership of Past-Presidents Phil Gabriel, FIALD, and Mark Roush, Experience Light, who forged a solid path for me to follow.

dawn
2012 IALD EDUCATION TRUST BENEFIT DINNER

For every moment I have given, I have received so much more in return. Working with the IALD staff has been especially rewarding, and I will forever be thankful to each and every one of them.  Without exception, the IALD staff works with the same passion and commitment to excellence that IALD members bring to lighting design. Thank you, Marsha, Jennifer, Jessica, Kelly, Courtney, Ashley, Doug, John, Emma, Sharonda, Pamela Danner and Jill. (Welcome, Theresa and Thomas; this is an amazing group of professionals).

I would be remiss not to mention the IALD Board and their personal contributions to the IALD and support of the IALD Education Trust. I have loved working with each of you over these last seven years.

Finally, to everyone who has bought a Blue Ribbon (or several), donated the cost of a pizza, sponsored or played golf in the IALD Education Trust Golf Classic, reviewed student portfolios, hired an intern, shared your knowledge of lighting design at a school, served on a committee, or donated time and money - thank you. I am proud of what we have accomplished because together we have done good work.

tribute_DawnIALD EDUCATION TRUST ACCOMPLISHES GREAT THINGS DURING THE TENURE OF DAWN HOLLINGSWORTH, IALD

dawn

The IALD Education Trust is proud to honor President Dawn Hollingsworth, IALD, as she transitions off the IALD Education Trust Board of Directors after seven remarkable years of service. In her service to the IALD Education Trust, Dawn has committed endless time and energy to supporting and encouraging education in architectural lighting design, and enhancing the future growth and development of the profession.

On Dawn's dedication, Steven Rosen, IALD, says: "I cannot overstate Dawn's commitment to both the IALD and the mission of the Educational Trust Fund. She has been an inspiration to the Board and mentor to many. From deciphering financial papers and requests for funding to being a tireless advocate for lighting design education, Dawn has been a leader in every sense of the word."

We would like to applaud Dawn's efforts by recognizing several achievements of the IALD Education Trust during her tenure on the Board of Directors:

In 2011, the IALD Education Trust Board of Directors allocated a major donation from Dan Gelman, Lighting Services, Inc., in memory of his father, to establish the IALD Education Trust Scholarship Fund. The fund enabled donors, for the very first time, to specifically allocate their contributions to scholarships for students worldwide. Thanks to the formation of this fund, the IALD Education Trust has received more money to allocate for scholarships.

Resources for educators have been enhanced through the Teach2Light program. During Dawn's tenure, improvements were made to teaching tools developed to assist educators in the classroom. Access to video teaching tools was expanded by launching them online. Videos of award-winning projects from the IALD International Lighting Design Awards Program, once only available on CD, are now accessible via the IALD Education Trust web site and IALD YouTube Channel. These video teaching tools are some of the most-viewed videos on the IALD YouTube.

New academic programs have been developed, while existing programs were expanded. Dawn convened a task force that formalized the process for providing funding to academic institutions worldwide. Now, the new Request for Funding Committee follows a streamlined set of procedures for collecting and evaluating proposals, and distributing funds. Dawn played an integral role in securing funding for the Rocky Mountain Lighting Academy at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and for the Master of Interior Design - Architectural Lighting track at the University of Oklahoma. Both programs provide education in lighting design, which helps to ensure the future of the architectural lighting design profession.

Fundraising efforts have been reinvigorated, leading to a considerable increase in annual donations. Year after year, the Annual IALD Education Trust Benefit Dinner outperforms previous fundraising records. In 2013, the event raised more than $230,000 USD, making it the most successful to-date. Dawn has also spearheaded new approaches for fundraising. In 2010, she launched the IALD Education Trust Golf Classic, which is held every other year during LIGHTFAIR International. The event has fundraised more than $35,000 USD for the IALD Education Trust. Her ongoing emphasis on the value of donations in all amounts helped to expand the number of donors and encouraged IALD Regions and Chapters to integrate IALD Education Trust fundraising into their local events.

Countless improvements have also been made to the infrastructure of the IALD Education Trust. Of these improvements, Peter Raynham, Educator IALD, says: "In her time as President, Dawn has gotten us much more organized, and the Trust now plans things out in a very strategic way." These strategic accomplishments include aligning the IALD and IALD Education Trust vision statements, unprecedented efforts to organize and refine the budget, initiating the first globalization efforts for the IALD Education Trust, and adding new staff support.

While these achievements are by no means comprehensive, they demonstrate the far-reaching and meaningful impact of Dawn's efforts on students, educators, academic programs, and the longevity of the IALD Education Trust. Andrea Hartranft, IALD, says: "Your generosity with time and knowledge, as well as your commitment to lighting education, has been inspiring to those of us who hope to continue to carry forward the goals you have set."

Dawn, thank you for your service. We are honored by your infectious enthusiasm and profound commitment to the future of architectural lighting design and the IALD Education Trust.

frequent_flyerSUPPORT STUDENT + EDUCATOR TRAVEL BY DONATING FREQUENT FLYER MILES

In an effort to maximize the benefit of the IALD Education Trust Stipend Program, the IALD Education Trust matches frequent flyer miles donors with student stipend recipients in need of travel support.

This program has enabled the IALD Education Trust to send many additional students to key lighting industry events. This year, frequent flyer mile donations supported the travel of two international students and an educator to LIGHTFAIR International. These frequent flyer mile donations allowed the IALD Education Trust to reallocate money that funded a charter bus for students from The Pennsylvania State University and Parsons The New School for Design to travel to LFI 2013 in Philadelphia.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to support lighting students and educators, by donating frequent flyer miles to cover a one-way or round-trip airline ticket. For more information, please send an email to Andrea Hartranft, IALD, at andrea@adhlighting.com.

In the spotlight this quarter is LightPlay, a hands-on student lighting activity, envisioned and executed each year at IALD Enlighten Americas by the IALD Education Trust.
lightplay 2013
In 2013, LightPlay participants were asked to identify the nighttime light signature of Montral by scouring the city in search of exceptional architectural lighting design. Students unveiled their findings and Montral LightMap during the President's Opening Reception, sponsored by Eaton's Cooper Lighting.

CM Kling & Associates generously offered to match all donations received for LightPlay up to $2,500 USD, in memory of Candace M. Kling, FIALD. Several companies followed the lead of CM Kling & Associates, helping the IALD Education Trust fundraise more than $20,000 USD. All proceeds received for LightPlay directly benefit IALD Education Trust programs for students, educators and academic programs.

catherineEMERGING LIGHTING DESIGNER EXPLAINS HOW THE IALD EDUCATION TRUST IMPACTED HER MOMENTUM IN LIGHTING

By Catherine Leskowat, Junior Associate IALD

Catherine Leskowat
CATHERINE LESKOWAT, JUNIOR ASSOCIATE IALD

These days, my Outlook inbox is overflowing. With so much on the to-do list, it's easy to label emails "mark as read," and file for later review. But, rewind a few months and, as a student, every invitation was golden, a possible link to a future in the lighting design industry and I responded with enthusiasm.

If we've met before, then you may have the impression that I thrive on social interaction. The reality is that a room full of people I aspire to work with and learn from, and the prospect of meeting one single stranger I admire, terrifies me. I was shaking when I approached Dawn Hollingsworth, IALD, after her presentation to my class (she was only the second professional lighting designer I'd ever met) and asked for advice on getting involved in lighting design as a student. But, I shouldn't have worried; Dawn and my professor, Dr. Jill Mulholland, lost no time in introducing me to student membership in the IALD, and a fan was born.

Soon after, I applied for an IALD Education Trust stipend and was supported to attend LIGHTFAIR International 2012, and few months later, Enlighten Americas 2012. After years of blank stares when I mentioned lighting design, I was finally in my element - attending lectures on the nuances of photometry, teaching classmates about point calculation, and my feet hurt from losing myself on the LFI trade show floor. As a student, I leaped at every opportunity provided by the IALD and IALD Education Trust to learn something new.

As I approached graduation and began my job search, I contacted designers and fellow students who I met at LFI and Enlighten Americas. This was the moment I had given everything for, so even though I had the privilege of interviewing with a couple of lighting design firms, I expanded my job search by visiting the IALD Career Center to check for new job postings. That's where I discovered Atelier Ten, an environmental design consulting company with a lighting group, which I am now proud to call home.

I haven't exactly arrived at my career destination, I've only just begun. But I don't want to lose momentum. As the rush calms down from graduating, moving, joining my new company and transitioning to a Junior Associate member of IALD, I don't want to "mark as read" and file. I want to "Chase the Dark" with my local IALD chapter, read lighting magazines cover to cover, and book my flight to Enlighten Americas four months ahead of time. I'd like to walk into many more rooms full of lighting fanatics to network, learn and remain challenged: head-over-heels for lighting design.
