ACTE Recognizes Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, and we would like to recognize the important contributions of AAPIs to CTE in the United States. Throughout history, AAPIs have shaped the development of CTE and made significant contributions to the workforce in a wide range of fields. Today, AAPIs continue to be represented in CTE programs, particularly in STEM fields, but they also face unique challenges such as:
Stereotyping: AAPI students may be stereotyped as being "good at math and science" or "lacking creativity," which can limit their opportunities in CTE fields that are considered more creative or artistic.
Language barriers: AAPI students who are not fluent in English may face challenges accessing and succeeding in CTE programs requiring strong language skills.
Role models: AAPI students may need help finding role models and mentors in their chosen CTE fields who share their cultural backgrounds and experiences.
Cultural differences: AAPI students may face challenges in navigating cultural differences and expectations in CTE programs, such as differences in communication styles, work ethic, or expectations around family and community involvement.
Access to resources and support: AAPI students may face disparities in access to help and support in CTE programs, such as funding, equipment, or guidance counseling.
During this special month, let us celebrate and honor the rich diversity of AAPI heritage and contributions to CTE.
