We have just broken 1000 names (!!!) in our petition drive to ask the EPA to pause their decision making process and fully and fairly evaluate the cost-benefits of removing (not leaving) the toxic waste at the CFAC Superfund site. No cost analysis was done by CFAC when they wrote the cleanup plan. CFAC simply dismissed this option as too costly--we need a solution that truly protects our water, our health, our community, and our economy for the long-term.

I can' wait till everyone who reads this email signs the petition and recruits five more people to sign it. We want to sent the EPA 5000 names and with your help we can do this. The first 1000 was the most important to get us started---keep it going--we need your help. Click Here and sign it!

Here's what the petition says:

To: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the MT Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) I signed this petition to respectfully request that your agencies pause the decision-making process to fully and fairly evaluate the cost-benefits of removing (not leaving) the toxic waste at the CFAC Superfund site. No cost analysis was done by CFAC when they wrote the cleanup plan. CFAC simply dismissed this option as too costly,

even though they acknowledged it would likely be a permanent and effective solution. We ask the EPA and DEQ to require an independent cost analysis be done to evaluate the permanence and long-term effectiveness of off-site removal. This is necessary to ensure the cleanup truly protects our water, our health, our community, and our economy. CFAC and ARCO, and early on Anaconda Co., made many millions of dollars operating this aluminum smelter from 1955-2009 and provided good jobs. But the citizens of the Flathead watershed shouldn't be left with their toxic mess. The site must be fully cleaned up and restored for future beneficial uses.

A Message from the Coalition for a Clean CFAC :(Columbia Falls Aluminum Company=CFAC) Our mission is to secure the comprehensive cleanup of the Columbia Falls Aluminum Company (CFAC) Superfund site for the health, enjoyment, and economic benefit of the local community and the protection of the Flathead watershed. We are opposed to the Plan to leave some 1.2 million cubic feet of highly toxic waste-in-place at this 960+ acre site. Leaving highly toxic waste in

place at this super fund site, located near the bank and headwaters of the Flathead River puts Columbia Falls and all of the valley's water quality at risk of serious contamination in the event of a major flood or seismic event or from the on-going spread of existing toxic plumes of contamination. (Note that far greater removal of toxic waste was accomplished at the Milltown/Clark Fork River designated EPA Superfund site near Missoula. Initial plans to contain waste on that site were abandoned and over 3-million tons of contaminated sediment were removed).

Citizens for a Better Flathead works to foster informed and active citizen participation in the decisions shaping the Flathead's future, and to champion the democratic principles, sustainable solutions, and shared vision necessary to keep the Flathead Special Forever. Since 1992 we have been working to secure policies that will keep the Flathead the place we love as it changes and grows.
