Jaila Moore aka Madame Precedent

Madame Precedent, how did your poetry journey begin?

My parents introduced me to poetry at an early age through thrift store books and media like DefJam. Around the age of 8, I received a journal as a gift and started writing poetry as a way to express my emotions while growing up with my brothers. This journal became a crucial outlet for me during my childhood. Despite my early start in writing, I didn't attempt spoken word poetry until I was 18 years old, when I participated in a pageant. This experience marked the beginning of my journey into spoken word poetry, expanding my passion for poetry into a new form of expression.

Could you tell us about the key themes or subjects that frequently inspire your poetry?

Most of my key themes center around life concepts and lessons learned from my perspective. Music and literature heavily influence my style and content of poetry because I believe that’s how God has always communicated with me. As a child, I gained wisdom through music, which naturally translates into my poetry. This early exposure to profound ideas through songs and books allowed me to transfer that wisdom in a similar manner to how it was gifted to me. Through my poetry, I aim to share the insights and lessons that have shaped my understanding of the world, blending the rhythms of music with the narratives of literature to create a unique and meaningful expression.

Many poets have unique rituals and routines when they write. Could you share your creative process and any specific habits that enhance your writing?

I don't adhere to a very organized or particular writing routine. Inspiration can strike me anywhere—in the car, at a restaurant, at work, or on a plane—and I like to jot down my ideas in my notes immediately. However, when it comes to committing my poems to memory, I do have specific rituals. I prefer to learn them in the dark first, as it helps me focus, and I typically rehearse before bed. These are the only aspects of my writing process that I am particularly meticulous about.

How has your poetry evolved over time, and what role does it play in your life today?

My poetry has become more refined from a writing standpoint over time. Immersing myself in literature across diverse genres and audiences has greatly enhanced the construction of my poems. Reading widely has exposed me to various styles, techniques, and perspectives, which have influenced my writing and allowed me to experiment with different forms and structures.

Performing my poetry has also been instrumental in shaping my work. The experience of sharing my poems with an audience has taught me to craft pieces that are not only relatable but also filled with content that resonates with a wide range of people. This practice has made me more mindful of inclusivity and connection in my writing.

Through poetry, I have found a powerful platform to use my voice—my superpower. This art form has given me the means to express my thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that touches others. Performing and writing poetry allow me to live my purpose, using my words to inspire, motivate, and relate to my circle of peers. My poetry is not just a creative outlet but a vehicle for living out my calling and making a meaningful impact.

Do you have any memorable or particularly meaningful experiences related to your poetry?

I have many memorable experiences, but some of the most significant ones come from my undergraduate performances. Every performance was done for free, but the real reward was allowing people to experience this unique style of expression and communion. These performances marked the beginning of my spoken word journey, and it felt like the poetry seed planted in my childhood finally began to bud.

The first two professional shows I did were particularly meaningful for two reasons. First, I learned that the seed I planted could actually be the most important crop I will ever water. This realization reinforced the value and potential of my craft. Second, these shows underscored the importance of community and connection, teaching me that these deserve the utmost reverence. Engaging with the audience and feeling their reactions emphasized the profound impact that poetry and spoken word can have on people's lives.

Through these experiences, I have seen how my poetry can bring people together, create shared experiences, and foster deep connections. This journey has not only validated my efforts but also inspired me to continue growing and sharing my voice with others.

Can you share some of the challenges you've faced during your journey and how you've overcome them?

Some challenges I have faced include learning the business aspects of poetry and protecting my art. Essentially managing myself, I have had to navigate the complexities of turning my passion into a sustainable career. Understanding contracts, marketing, and intellectual property rights has been a steep learning curve.

Despite these challenges, poetry itself has never been a struggle for me. Instead, it has been the accelerant that helps me overcome my obstacles. Writing and performing poetry have provided me with the resilience and creativity needed to tackle the business side of my art. This dual journey of artistic expression and professional growth has shaped me into a more versatile and empowered artist.

If so, could you share your thoughts on the intersection of poetry and activism?

My entire platform is built on the intersection of poetry and activism. As a poet, my role is to share my point of view on whatever moves me. As an activist, I strive to incite social and political change in the communities that need it. Therefore, as Madame Precedent, I choose to share my perspectives on the social and political issues that call for reformation in some way.

Many times, this means inspiring, motivating, and influencing people to build on their own perspectives. While I do not claim to have all the perfect ideas or expertise on how to fix things, I believe in empowering more people who want to assist in being the change. Specifically, issues like censorship, gun control, and systemic oppression are ones I have addressed, but I will continue to speak on any and everything that moves me to do so. I consider it a spiritual obligation to use my voice for advocacy and change.

By combining poetry and activism, I aim to create a platform where artistic expression meets meaningful action, encouraging others to reflect on and engage with the pressing issues of our time. My poetry becomes a tool for raising awareness, sparking dialogue, and driving collective action towards a more just and equitable society.

What role do you believe technology and social media play in modern activism, and how do you leverage these tools to your advantage?

Technology and social media have played a crucial role in the significant progress made in activism, allowing everyone to participate in some form or fashion. Historically, when people thought of activists, figures like Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks came to mind. Nowadays, there is an expectation for every celebrity or public figure to engage in activism, even though achieving public figure status requires no specific qualifications and can be self-declared.

For me, technology and social media are tools that magnify our societal needs, providing a platform for increased awareness. Awareness is the foundation of activism; without it, we wouldn’t know what issues to address. Social media answers two very important questions for me: “How am I needed?” and “Who can I serve?”

Social media allows for rapid dissemination of information, mobilization of support, and organization of events. It has democratized the ability to raise awareness, making it possible for anyone with an internet connection to share their voice and advocate for change. Hashtags, viral videos, and online petitions have become powerful tools in the activist’s toolkit, making it easier to rally support and effect change on a global scale.

Through platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, we can see real-time accounts of issues affecting communities worldwide, engage in discussions, and collaborate on solutions. This visibility and connectivity have led to a more informed and engaged public, driving movements that address everything from environmental issues to social justice.

In summary, technology and social media are indispensable in modern activism. They enhance our ability to raise awareness, connect with others, and take meaningful action. They are not just tools for communication but instruments for societal change, answering the essential questions of how and where we are needed.

Can you share a success story or a specific moment in your activism that you feel had a significant positive impact on your community?

I really enjoy performing at community events, especially those geared towards students. Students are typically in the early gardening stages of their lives, meaning they are looking for seeds to plant, planting them, and beginning to water them. It is exciting to help a student decide what types of plants they want to grow and then also give them something to nurture those plants.

In 2022, I had the privilege of speaking to a Girl Scout troop and helping them earn their Scribe Patches. This experience was incredibly rewarding, as I could share my passion for poetry and witness its impact on young minds. Poetry means so much to me and has changed my life, and it was fulfilling to see it inspire the next generation.

Performing at these events allows me to engage with students in a meaningful way, providing them with the tools and inspiration they need to cultivate their own creativity and passions. Whether through poetry, storytelling, or other forms of artistic expression, I aim to plant seeds of confidence, creativity, and resilience in these young individuals.

By participating in community events, I contribute to their growth and development, helping them to envision and create their future. This is not just about sharing my art but about fostering a supportive and encouraging environment where students can thrive and realize their potential.

Do you have any mentors, professors, or individuals who have had a specific impact on your personal growth?

I have been blessed with incredible mentors and role models who have played vital roles in influencing and guiding me. The most significant ones didn’t just show me how to be like them; they helped me become my true self. I am forever grateful for these men and women, as they are my walking parables and truly Heaven-sent. Their wisdom and support have shaped my journey, instilling in me values of perseverance, integrity, and compassion. Their mentorship has been instrumental in helping me realize my potential and guiding me toward my true path. I strive to honor their influence by mentoring others and paying their kindness forward.

What advice would you offer to aspiring poets who are looking to find their own voice and style in the world of poetry?

I always advise asking yourself if you will be okay with your decision next week, in the middle of the night, when you're alone. It's important to reflect on the long-term impact and personal alignment of your choices. Anyone can write and recite a poem, but authenticity is at the core of a spoken word artist’s true identity. This genuine self-reflection ensures that your art is not only honest but also deeply resonant with your audience. Authenticity in your work allows you to connect on a deeper level, making your spoken word performances more impactful and meaningful. It's essential to ensure that your decisions and expressions align with your true self and values, as this will ultimately define your integrity and the authenticity of your art.

Reflecting on your academic and extracurricular activities, is there a particular accomplishment or project that you're especially proud of?

Early in 2023, I was honored to participate in a fellowship where I conducted research on art in Fort Worth, TX. As part of my research presentation, I included footage of children from a small orphanage in Ghana performing poems in multiple languages with pride and excellence. Additionally, I recited an original piece of my own, which was published in August 2023.

The goal of my presentation was to raise awareness and educate politicians on the vital role that art plays in healing and growing humanity as a whole. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and I was the first fellow in history to receive a standing ovation. More importantly, the impact of the presentation extended beyond applause: lawmakers are now creating policies that encourage participation in the arts and advocating for enhancements in artist spaces.

This experience underscored the power of art to bridge cultures and inspire meaningful change. By showcasing the talents of the Ghanaian children alongside my own work, I aimed to highlight the universal language of art and its capacity to foster empathy and understanding across different communities.

Are there any upcoming projects or events you'd like to share?

Spits N Stitches is an innovative event produced by Sol last year, combining a poetry show and a fashion show in a unique, immersive experience. I had the privilege of serving as the Creative Director for this project, designing custom garments for each of the performing poets. It was a deeply fulfilling experience to see the artists wear their bespoke pieces with such pride, bringing tears to my eyes.

This year, 2024, we are thrilled to bring this event back with some exciting enhancements. The event promises to be even more dynamic, blending the spoken word with fashion in new and creative ways. I am eagerly looking forward to creating this experience once again and sharing it with a new audience. The fusion of poetry and fashion not only highlights the beauty of artistic expression but also celebrates individuality and creativity in a powerful and memorable way.

Are you a member of any special affiliates or organizations?

I am a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, specifically the Omicron Gamma Zeta Chapter. Additionally, I am a student in the TSU eMPA Cohort, which is part of Texas Southern University’s Executive Master of Public Administration program. I am also an active member of Sol Poetry, a community dedicated to the art of spoken word, and an advisor with Borderless Friends Forever, an organization that focuses on cultural exchange and fostering global friendships.
