HURRICANE BRINGS EVACUEES TO TIFTON
LOCAL WEATHER IMPACT EXPECTED TO BE MINIMAL
While
Hurricane Matthew is expected to have a
minimal weather impact on the
Tiftarea, there is
another effect of the storm: A
n influx of evacuees from Florida and the Georgia coast.
"I understand that all motels in Tift County are already filled to capacity," Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough reported Thursday. "Traffic will undoubtedly be  very congested throughout the weekend."
The sheriff said that
an evacuation shelter has been set up at
Gressette Gym on the
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College campus. The shelter can serve up to
225 evacuees and will be open until
6 p.m. Sunday.
Personnel from the
Red Cross and the
Department of Family & Children's Services are staffing the shelter, and the
Salvation Army is providing food, Scarbrough said. A limited number of pets may be lodged at the
Tift County Animal Shelter.
Other local shelters include the Tift County Recreation Department and the Church of God campground.
Because of the
mandatory evacuation
of
Georgia's coastal areas
, more than
200 hospital patients
from Camden and Glynn counties are being
relocated
to hospitals and healthcare facilities in
South Georgia
, including
Tift Regional Medical Center
(TRMC) in
Tifton
and
Cook Medical Center
in
Adel
.
TRMC is the regional coordinating hospital, assisting with the relocation of coastal patients into facilities in Ben Hill, Berrien, Cook, Echols, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Tift and Turner counties.
According to the National Weather Service, Tifton will get rain today (Friday) with winds up to 25 mph during the day and gusts up to 40 mph tonight. On Saturday, there is a
40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9 a.m., then mostly sunny with a high near 86 and wind gusts as high as 30 mph.

VOTER DEADLINE
ELECTION REGISTRATION MUST BE DONE BY TUESDAY
The deadline to register to vote in the presidential election is upon us: If you plan on voting in the election, you only have until Tuesday, Oct. 11, to get registered.
Anyone registering online must have a driver's license or state identification number. Those unsure of their registration status can check it through the state's
"My Voter Page,"
www.mvp.sos.ga.gov,
where you may also view and download sample ballots.
To register to vote you must:
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be a legal resident of the county in which you register
- Be at least 17 1/2 years of age to register and 18 years of age to vote
- Not be serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude
- Have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge

More than 6.5 million voters are currently registered in Georgia, according to the Secretary of State's office.

NEW GREENHOUSE
AT UGA TIFTON ALLOWS RESEARCH YEAR-ROUND
As part of a statewide turfgrass facilities enhancement project, construction is being completed on new turfgrass facilities at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus.
The project includes the addition of a new greenhouse that will help continue research year-round through every season.
"We demolished the old turfgrass head house and a couple of the greenhouses, so we want to get those modernized," said Joe West, assistant dean.
"We have a world-class turfgrass program, and they need the kind of facility that can help further their efforts."
UGA's turf program has provided grass varieties used at World Cup stadiums, Augusta National Golf Club, the Super Bowl and many other football fields and golf courses.
Brian Schwartz, a turfgrass breeding expert at UGA Tifton, said the new greenhouse will make the program stronger.
"By having the ability to keep our grasses warm during the winter, they will grow faster and will continue to expand so we can use them later. If we keep this material out in the field and have a frost or a freeze, then that could be all the material we get for the year," Schwartz said. "It allows us to use more of the year for growing and propagating."
The new greenhouse features many amenities that weren't part of the previous greenhouse, including a heating system, concrete floors, traditional benches, irrigation, tempered glass and a new type of cooling system.
"A greenhouse in the summer in Tifton is too hot for plants, and they often die in there," Schwartz said. "We're going to have sides that roll up during the summer, which will help cool the greenhouse by airflow."
West said the
new greenhouse will let researchers continue their work during the winter.
"It will extend their season, and they'll have more control over the environment of those grasses. It gives them more resources for greater research opportunities and further expands an already excellent research program," West said.

UNITED WAY, EDUCATION FOUNDATION
The United Way of South Central Georgia teamed with the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence to present checks Tuesday to Omega School for its Summer Reading Program and Accelerated Reader points earned.
Omega School housed a satellite reading center this past summer because of the difficulty of students and parents getting to the foundation's reading center in Tifton at the United Way building.

Katie Crowley: Model for a Day
|
Katie Crowley lives in a group home through the auspices of Easter Seals Southern Georgia because of her intellectual disabilities.
She attends the organization's day program on Tift Avenue and has had a longtime hope of one day being a model.
Easter Seals partnered with Blush, an Albany boutique, last week to give Crowley an opportunity to model clothes during a photo shoot.
It is part of an Easter Seals project to make dreams come true for the people the organization serves. The concept is to get the community involved in helping dreams become a reality.
