About Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation

Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation was the dream of a blind man, Atlanta Lions Club member Tom Bingham. In 1949, the Atlanta Lions Club led by Bingham, along with Moultrie and Albany Lions, founded GLLF. Since then, Lions Clubs have served as the cornerstone of the organization and maintain a vital role in the growth and reach of GLLF's mission: to create a better Georgia by bringing individuals into a world of sight.

Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation (GLLF) partners with a statewide network of optometrists and ophthalmologists to provide vision screenings, eye exams, eyeglasses and eye surgeries to over 7,000 Georgia residents each year - enabling greater independence and increased quality of life for Georgians in financial need. In addition. GLLF operates one of the largest eyeglass recycling centers in the United States providing impact domestically and internationally.

Atlanta Lions Club has a Rich History!

Did you know that in 1925, Helen Keller attended the Lions Club International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights for the blind in the crusade against darkness." This is why Lions have traditionally been known for their vision care service.

The Atlanta Lions took her challenge to heart:

  • In 1949, we founded the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation.
  • In 1963, we founded the Georgia Eye Bank.
  • In 1968, Atlanta Lion George Crumbley created the first Peach Bowl to benefit the Lighthouse. The Peach Bowl continues to be college football’s most charitable bowl game donating $50K each year to help the Lighthouse provide vision and hearing services to Georgians in need.
