Confused about How the SSAT Scores are Reported?
Parents often reach out to us asking for clarification about how the SSAT test is scored and reported. Private schools will see both the scaled score and the percentile on your child's score report, so what do they use for admission?

Admission officers tell us that percentile means more. The percentile is calculated using scores from all the students in your child's grade who have taken the test over the past three years.

Basically, your child will receive a raw score based on the amount of questions that were correct, minus 1/4 point deducted for each wrong answer. This is then converted to a scaled score in each section (Math, Verbal, and Reading).
For the Middle Level SSAT, 440 is the lowest possible score a student can earn and 710 is the highest score for each section. The total scaled score for a Middle Level SSAT is the sum of the scores for the quantitative, verbal, and reading sections. It has a low value of 1320, a high value of 2130, and a midpoint of 1725.

For the Upper Level SSAT, 500 is the lowest possible score a student can earn and 800 is the highest score for each section. The total scaled score for an Upper Level
SSAT is the sum of the scores for the quantitative, verbal, and reading sections. It has a low value of 1500, a high value of 2400, and a midpoint of 1950.

Your section scaled scores and total scaled score are given percentile ranks, indicating how well you scored compared to other test-takers of the same grade and gender.
Private schools want to consider how your child fares against other students who took the same test at the same grade level, in order to determine their competency for attendance at their school.

How does your child's score compare?
