Hello, dear friend of Hostos, and thank you for reading the Fall 2021 Hostos Community College Foundation Newsletter!
Fall is always an exciting time at Hostos, but this year marks an exceptional return. Thanks to meticulous preparations by our dedicated on-campus services team and CUNY leadership, the College is entering phase two of the reopening plan – this allows students and faculty to return to campus up to 50 percent capacity. Many students have been coming back to campus in-person for the first time since March 2020. While it is wonderful to see campus return to life, we must remember that Hostos and its students never stopped persisting and achieving. Thanks to the tireless efforts of students, faculty and staff, and the generosity of our supporters, students excelled, and the College sustained the spirit of Hostos through a thriving virtual community.
Now it is time to look ahead, and the year before us holds great promise. The College is ready to start this year off stronger than ever by launching new success programs and – as always – it is the mission of the Foundation to ensure that Hostos students have access to opportunities that can propel them toward the futures they desire. Please keep reading to learn about the exciting new initiatives coming to Hostos this year, as well as ways you can help students, the College, and the community to keep moving forward.

Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift
In a stunning testament to this institution, philanthropist Ms. MacKenzie Scott named Hostos Community College as a beneficiary of a $15 million donation – the largest single donor gift in the College’s history. The contribution was announced in an essay where she recognized Hostos as a leading force affecting socioeconomic change for marginalized populations.
President Daisy Cocco De Filippis is chairing the Hostos Advisory Corps, comprised of faculty, staff, students, and alumni stakeholders. This group is charged with determining the most impactful use of these funds, which have been detailed in The President’s Initiative for Student Success, College Growth and Stakeholders’ Engagement. Two million dollars of the total gift will be used to kick start these programs; the remaining $13 million will be held in an endowment with the CUNY investment pool. Read more about the unique initiatives hoping to boost student success and advance the South Bronx community here.
