Brought to you by the Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP). This is a Newsletter for the Health Science Librarians, HLSP Liaisons, and Health Care Providers in South Central New York State.

Winter Happenings

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Winter 2024 edition of HLSP News. I hope you had a wonderful Holiday season and the Winter Season with its ever changing weather is going well for you. Please enjoy this edition of HLSP News where I will share some of the great things happening with HLSP at SCRLC.

Electronic Resources. We're 6 months into the new subscriptions for the STAT!Ref and the STAT PEARLS resources and usage is increasing with several titles in STAT!Ref showing steady use and an uptick in accounts for STAT PEARLS. These resources are available to all HLSP members, and we encourage all members to use them. Flyers are available for posting in areas where providers can see and easily access the services. Please read below for details on accessing both resources.

Also, remember that we provide a subscription to New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) for all HLSP members. Please let me know if you have any questions about the NEJM subscription and you can read below for details about accessing the journal.

Learning. The Health, Wellness and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn series continues!

We will hold the next Lunch and Learn program on February 14 at Noon, and it will be a review of the NNLM webinar held on October 11 on the topic of health disparities for BIPOC individuals. There will be opportunities to discuss the topic during this session. For details, please see below.

Grant Applications. The HLSP grant applications have been received from most of the HLSP members and half of the grant checks have been distributed. If you have any questions about your application, please reach out to me. Remember, dues will need to be paid before we can send the funds. For more information about the HLSP Grant program, please read below.

Other Information. This edition of HLSP News also includes information about Winter health observances, SAD vs. sad and some upcoming continuing educational opportunities from NNLM and MLA as well as recordings of prior SCRLC webinars.

If you have any questions about SCRLC, our HLSP benefits, or anything in this edition of HLSP News, please email me. And, if you would like to stay informed about HLSP happenings in between the quarterly editions of HLSP News, please submit a request to join our HLSP listserv.

STAT!Ref and STAT PEARLS

Since the beginning of July, we have been providing our HLSP members with reference resources and a quiz bank through STAT!Ref and STAT PEARLS. Usage reports show that the STAT!Ref resources have consistent and regular use. The use of STAT PEARLS has yet to begin. Here is a quick synopsis of each new resource:

  • STAT!Ref reference resources - an intuitive, full-text reference resource that enables users to cross-search evidence-based and authoritative healthcare references in seconds.
  • an NCLEX - RN Quiz Bank through STAT PEARLS - includes more than 4,000 multiple choice questions in the bank and articles from PubMed are used to support the questions.

If you or your providers haven't already taken advantage of these additional resources, we encourage you to do so now. They are designed to provide information to providers that will allow for a higher level of care for patients. If you are using these resources, please feel free to reach out to Christine to obtain usage statistics for your hospital. And if you would like to increase your hospital's use of these resources, we also have flyers (with information and QR Codes) that can be distributed at your hospital, and you can reach out to Christine for those as well.

We held a training webinar from STAT for both resources on September 20 and the session was recorded so if you weren't able to attend or would like a review, you can access it here. The training was open for all HLSP member hospital librarians/liaisons AND also the medical providers (i.e., physicians, nurses, technicians, etc.) and administrative staff so please share it with anyone who might be interested in these resources. If you or anyone in your hospital, including providers, have a question about either resource, we're here to provide answers.

New England Journal of Medicine

A Benefit of HLSP Membership

SCRLC offers a subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) for all our HLSP members. This subscription can be used by all staff at the member hospital including doctors, nurses, technicians and administrators. When you get a chance, please share with your providers and administrators either through email or posting in common areas used by the providers or administrators. NEJM has been long recognized throughout the world as an important source of the latest medical information and includes peer-reviewed research, literature reviews, and clinical trial information. If you or your providers aren't sure how to access NEJM or would like to see the usage numbers for your hospital, please let us know.

Health Wellness and Hospital Libraries

Lunch and Learn

We have held 4 successful events in this series and we're planning additional programs for the Winter and Spring. The goal of this program is to provide information that can be useful for your job and introduce you to the other HLSP members as well as other SCRLC members including museums and other types of libraries. We also encourage you to include your providers in this program.

The next program will be on February 14 and it will be on the topic of health disparities by NNLM. Emily Spence did an excellent job of describing the history of the health disparities for BIPOC in the webinar presented in October and we will review the recording of that webinar. The title of the program is "Health Bytes - Making the link between structural inequities and health disparities." We will have an opportunity to discuss the recording as well.

We continue to work on other programs including AI in a local hospital, graphic medicine and chemicals involved in cleaning materials used in the workplace. Dates and times for those will be announced as soon as possible. Other topics we will pursue include QA in hospitals; credentialing of medical providers; and new medical advances. Let me know if you have any questions, thoughts or comments about the Health and Wellness Lunch and Learn series (including future topics).

Health Observances

Throughout the year, various governmental agencies and other organizations recognize health conditions through observance days, weeks and months in order to raise awareness and to highlight actions that can be taken to improve overall health. Below are a few observances that will occur in January, February, March, and April (to help you plan!).

January

National Blood Donor Month

January was first recognized as National Blood Donor Month in 1970. Winter can be a difficult time of year to collect blood and donating blood saves many lives and improves health for many people.

February

American Heart Month

2024 marks 60 years of American Heart Month. NIH has information about ways to recognize this month. The American Heart Association also has information.

March

National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and the NIH has plenty of information about colorectal cancer including ways to avoid it and treatments if you learn you have it.

April

World Autism Awareness Month

April is World Autism Awareness month and Autism Speaks provides ways you can work to help raise awareness about Autism.

HLSP Grant Program

We're working through the grants and checks have started to be sent. Keep in mind that we need a completed application and dues need to be paid before we can send a check to any member.

As a reminder, the funds must be used for hospital library items and services and those items and services must be available to all users of the hospital library system. The users include all medical providers and any administrators in the hospital. The program is designed to enhance the hospital libraries' ability to improve patient care and not to supplement the resources of an individual.

So, for example, the funds can be used to purchase an item(s) (such as a book(s)) or to pay for a library service(s) (such as ClinicalKey) as long as the item(s) or service(s) are available in the same way and using the same processes and procedures that are used for other library items and services. Likewise, the HLSP grant funds may be used for a subscription to an electronic journal when the journal is available to all individuals who have access to other library materials.

Continuing Education

Upcoming Webinars

SCRLC has the following program planned for this Winter:

Health, Wellness and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn Series

"Health Bytes - Making the link between structural inequities and health disparities" was presented and recorded on October 11, 2023, NNLM Region 3. They did an excellent job in explaining the health disparities that BIPOC people face daily, and rather than bringing in a presenter, we're going to view that recording and there will be opportunity to discuss the issues it raises. February 14 at Noon. REGISTER HERE.

Stay tuned for announcements about additional programs to be held this Winter and early Spring.
