How a Shipping Container Saved a Life
|
|
|
Greetings!
In Matthew 6:8, Jesus tells his followers that "your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him!" It's a good thing, because I would have NEVER thought to ask for this!
More than two years ago, ECM organized and sent a shipping container to Uganda. Recently, a staff member told the unlikely story of how the mother of one of our sponsored children benefited from that container. The woman had been sick for some time, and was quite close to death. Our staff member began to pray about how she could help. She remembered a book called "All Your Health Questions Answered Naturally," which had been sent on the container, and began reading the chapter on HIV/AIDS. She rushed back to the hospital with the "secret remedy," raw food and plenty of water. Like the command God gave to Namaan to bathe in the Jordan seven times to be cured of leprosy, the remedy seemed ridiculously simple. Yet, they tried it. At first it was a struggle for her just to open her mouth and eat a little. Soon, however, she started gaining strength and speaking, then sitting up in bed. Within a week, she was discharged from the hospital. Had she been cured of HIV/AIDS? No, but she had been given a new lease on life, and more time with her daughter. Given her prior condition, it was a remarkable turnaround.
Who could have thought that an obscure health book would be donated to ECM, who would send it on a very expensive shipping container all the way to Uganda, where it would be used to save a life? Our God does some pretty amazing things, wouldn’t you agree?

Have You Ever Thought About...
|
|
ECM just had it’s first Cosmic Bowling fundraiser and it was a blast! (see more pictures at the end of this newsletter).
The idea was to introduce ECM to people that were not already familiar with what we do. We had almost 70 people attend, most new to ECM!
Prior to the event, ECM solicited restaurants & grocery stores for food to serve at the event. We also solicited donated items (including gift cards which in some cases we used to purchase items) from local businesses to make up gift baskets to
raffle off.
At the afternoon event, we sold one color ticket the attendees could put in bags for the gift baskets of their choice, sold another color ticket for a 50/50 raffle, and sold glow sticks. We featured children that needed sponsorship in a PowerPoint presentation that played on the bowling alley’s TV.
In the end, we introduced many new people to ECM, got 5 children sponsored, and made a little money for ECM’s ministry. We consider the event a huge success, especially for a first year event!
Could you do something similar in your area? Does this give you ideas of other fundraisers you could do to benefit ECM?

- Pray for a transition in leadership at Haven of Hope Children's Home in Ghana. Pray that duties caring for the children and in reporting back to Mission Central would be understood and carried out well. Pray for their ability to stretch finances to meet all the needs.
- Pray for missionaries Jim and Carolyn Driscoll's mothers, both who have failing health. Pray for Jim, having a knee replacement September 7.
- Pray for preparations for our annual fundraising banquet in Crown Point, IN in October. Pray as we seek donated items from businesses to use in our silent auction. Pray for the volunteers needed to help make this a successful event.
- Pray for a large fundraising effort that will be beginning this fall. ECM will be trying to bring new supporters into the family with the help of current friends and supporters. We will also be seeking to bring more current supporters to a regular monthly giving pattern.
- Pray for our Director Mark Luckey and our Board of Directors, for wisdom and guidance as they make decisions. Pray for the U.S. staff, that they would prioritize well, and be effective in their work. Pray for the African National Staff, for compassionate hearts and vision to see solutions outside the box when necessary.
- Pray for relief from the drought and famine in the Uganda Karamoja Homeland.
- Pray for sponsors for the many children that have lost a sponsor.

We're Sending a Missionary to Congo!
|
|
 |
|
Sharise Riether previously served in China, Uganda, South Africa and the Republic of Congo. She enjoyed her time in the Republic of Congo, but knew it was not where God was calling her!
Sharise contacted ECM, knowing that there were not a lot of organizations sending missionaries to the Democratic Republic of
Congo, but also knowing that was where God was calling her to serve!
Sharise really enjoys working with children and has worked in a preschool, at a children’s home, led children’s Sunday school, and currently is a soccer coach. In conjunction with ECM’s current work in Kinshasa, she will work with street children. She will also
start a ministry to young children in the community.
Sharise is now beginning her support raising, in hopes of reaching DR Congo in 2018.
