Hope for Kampala Street Children
|
|
Greetings!
Deep in the Kisenyi and Katwe slums of Kampala, Uganda, live the most discriminated-against inhabitants of the city, the refugees from Karamoja. Forced to travel to Kampala because of famine, mothers and children searching for just enough to survive fill the muddy, rat infested slum, often going without food and sleeping outside despite adverse weather. With the downtown skyscrapers of Kampala as a backdrop, these women and children search for hope begging on the street or selling their bodies in prostitution.
ECM project coordinator Recho Achom and her staff work tirelessly to bring hope to those in the slum who have lost all hope. Working closely with single mothers who saw no choice but to bring their children to Kampala, they are able to keep the children off the street and in school, as well as share the gospel on a regular basis. In addition, they meet with the mothers weekly to teach not only biblical lessons, but also hygiene, sanitation, diet, and parenting.
But there is so much more that could be done, if not for a lack of funds. A
gift for this project today
will help Recho and her staff bring hope to more kids like ten-year old Mary, who began begging on the street at the age of two, searching only for some food and a place to sleep, or Maruk, who also found himself sleeping on the street and begging for money at age two, wearing plastic bags for clothing, only to be thrown in a garbage truck by the local police to be hauled away. Time and time again these kids tell us that when they grow up they want to help other street kids, because, in their words, no child should EVER have to live on the street. There are more kids like Mary and Maruk who need help, who need an education, and who need the hope of Jesus. To provide support for these vulnerable kids, please
contact our office
today.

Portable Solar Water Heating Systems
|
|
90% of Ugandans use firewood or charcoal to cook and heat water, putting a tremendous environmental strain on the country's limited wood supply. Up to now, use of gas and solar hot water heating systems have been limited to the very rich, leaving most Ugandans to cut trees for fuel at an alarming rate.
But now there is an affordable solution, and you can help make it possible! A portable, 11-liter water container is now available for purchase, and we want to make them available to ECM families. These containers will use the power of the sun to bring water to a boil so that it can be used for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and even making tea, and reduce the need to burn fuels such as charcoal and wood by approximately 50%!
Your gift of just $15 will make it possible for us to offer these resource-saving devices to ECM families in all our projects at a reduced rate!
Please use this link
to make an online gift today to purchase one or more solar water heaters. Or, send a check to our office, designated for "Solar Water Heaters – Uganda."

Uganda Karimojong Kampala Beggar project

- Pray for Triny (story below) for recovery from surgery, and that the tumor would not grow again. Pray for funds to cover the costs.
- Pray for ECM's Uganda staff (story below), that they would use the leadership training they received for the betterment of the children and for God's glory.
- Along with ECM staff and leadership, pray with renewed determination and fasting (when led) over the next few weeks as ECM seeks guidance for future ministry. Pray for God to speak to us in a powerful way, to keep us faithful in sharing ECM's work, to provide over and above what He has ever done in the past, and to never cease in praising Him for His wondrous works and all He does for us each and every day!

From February 19-21, ECM International Director Mark Luckey teamed with Reach Global missionaries Mike and Kathi Maggard to present a leadership seminar for ECM-Uganda staff and pastors from the Evangelical Free Church of Uganda. The seminar was held at the Lweza Conference Center, just south of Kampala. Mike and Kathi travel all over the world, helping leaders learn how to lead like Jesus. This seminar focused on leading with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, drawing entirely on biblical leadership principles. The material was well received and will undoubtedly help ECM staff members to be more effective in their work with children, families, and other staff members. Pray that they will put into practice all they have learned!

ECM Adds Another Missionary
|
|
 |
Linda Moore has joined the ECM family as a missionary. She previously served in Uganda and other places, and will be going back to Uganda with ECM.
Linda grew up on a large farm with no running water, sinks, tubs or indoor bathrooms. She feels God used this to prepare her for service in Uganda!
Linda’s vision is to provide a transitionary group home for orphans, single and abused girls/women and their children, and widows who are unable to provide for themselves. The home would keep families intact as Linda works with them to reinsert orphans into their immediate or extended families. She also wants to continue to provide education through sponsorship, something she has been working on even while back in the states. The home would provide discipleship and life skills training so the women can provide and care for their children after they transfer to life outside the home.
|
|
 |
 |
Linda’s heart is to educate and equip women with vocational skills, to empower them to provide for themselves and their families.
Most importantly, Linda wants to share the Gospel and change the cycle of poverty one child at a time, one family at a time, and one village at a time.
Linda’s goal is to have her funds raised by June. Pray with us for Linda’s success!

ECM Executive Director Mark Luckey had the opportunity to visit with Triny and her mom during his recent visit to Uganda, accompanied by videographer Bob Ditty, who will be producing a video about Triny, her struggles, and her amazing courage. Look for it soon on our website, www.ecmafrica.org.
Despite the obvious difficulties that Triny faces each day, she is filled with joy, perseverance, and great determination. Many would have given up long ago and succumbed to this difficult burden. Yet she carries on, even attending school until the headaches made it too difficult to study. She has been waiting patiently for much needed surgery for over six months now. Her wait came to an end, when Dr. Niall Kirkpatrick (UK) visited Uganda to operate on Triny on March 6. Dr. Kirkpatrick traveled to Uganda and did the surgery free of charge. He also trained Ugandan surgeons to do the surgery, so that in future years, Triny will not have to wait so long for the help she so desperately needs. Your generous gifts paid for his accommodations, travel to and from the hospital, fees at the Children's Hospital, and follow up care. Thank you to all who donated
financially to help Triny, at least for a time, be free of this burden.
Check our website and our Facebook page in the coming weeks for updates on Triny's surgery and recovery, and don't forget to keep her and her family in your prayers!
