More than 70 people gathered at the historic Peel House on Saturday, May 4, for a delightful morning of teas, brunch and engaging conversations to celebrate Mother’s Day and to show support for the mothers who lead Partners in Housing households.

Those in attendance stepped into the world of timeless elegance at the Peel House which was crafted by William and Patty Jewett in 1905. Professional portraits were taken against the backdrop of the enchanting Peel House stairway and were accompanied by the soothing melodies of pianist Abigail Bates.

A special art project in honor of mothers in the Partners in Housing’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program was made to be

showcased at the Colorado House where many of the program’s partners reside and where all partner life skills classes are hosted.

Mary Stegner, Partners in Housing executive director, gave a warm welcome and updates to attendees while a video of partner success stories played in the background.

A special thanks to the Partners in Housing Events Committee comprised of Julie Edmunds, Helen Fisher, Karen Littlejohn and Karon McCormick. Thank you to the Peel House, Gold Peak Films and Abigail Bates for their gracious support of the event.

The Peel House, built in 1905, provided an enchanting venue for the event.

Attendees helped with a special art project to be hung at the Colorado House in honor of mothers in the Family Self-Sufficiency program.

Partners in Housing is honored to have incredible volunteers who tirelessly dedicate their time and talents to our cause, and for that, we always love to share our sincerest gratitude to them. Our recent Volunteer Appreciation Celebration on April 26 was a resounding success! The event was marked by moments of joy and excitement that we could not have been more delighted to have shared with our volunteers. We love that we got the chance to celebrate our volunteers and show how much each and every one of them means to us and our community.

Since 1991, the steadfast support of our past and current volunteers has been instrumental in uplifting and guiding hundreds of families to self-sufficiency in our community of Colorado Springs. We could not have done what we do today without our amazing volunteers.

In the past two years alone, more than 500 volunteers collectively contributed over 8,401 hours of service, demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to our mission and the individuals we serve. We are profoundly grateful for their dedication which serves as the cornerstone of our organization's success.

As we reflect on our volunteers’ remarkable achievements, we are inspired by the transformative power of collective action. Together, we are forging a brighter future for those in need.

Thank you to these generous Colorado Springs businesses that contributed to the Volunteer Appreciation Celebration: Trader Joe’s, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Crumbl Cookies, Costco, Josh & John’s, TopGolf, Dutch Bros Coffee, Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Co., and Kneader’s Bakery & Café.

A multitude of factors can greatly impact family success during their time with us. Partners in Housing staff have recently identified transportation, housing affordability post program, and childcare accessibility as the most pressing barriers faced by families.

A recent Partner, Christina,* had an issue with transportation that impacted her ability to drive to and from work and drop her daughter off at daycare. Christina was enrolled with CCCAP – the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program. This program helps eligible families pay a portion of childcare costs while they are working, searching for work, or are in school. Many families in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program access this support. However, if a certain number of days are missed then benefits can be removed, and childcare then shifts to self-pay. To restart CCCAP benefits, families must work with the provider on any amounts owed to become eligible and re-apply.

This scenario happened to Christina when she faced car troubles. She transferred to self-pay for childcare but simultaneously lost her employment due to attendance issues from lack of transportation. This caused a snowball effect for Christina – without a job, the amounts owed for childcare self-pay were overwhelming, and she could no longer access it to then work toward securing employment.

Christina found support within the Partners in Housing “Work It! Program” where dedicated volunteers assisted her in developing a new plan to access employment and daycare for her child. Going back to the drawing board is a difficult choice to make, but thankfully with the support of Partners in Housing, Christina managed to readjust and make progress toward her career and financial goals.

Through our Child Enrichment Center, access to respite care for families drastically improves their ability to focus on work, school, certifications, housing navigation, or other appointments with Partners in Housing staff to access stable housing and brighter futures post program. By losing access to one piece of the puzzle, whether that is licensed childcare, transportation, or employment, this can develop into a setback that can feel insurmountable. At Partners in Housing, we work to remove barriers, improve circumstances, and work toward their financial and career goals.

If you would like to take part in removing barriers for families on their path to self-sufficiency, here are some ways you can contribute:
