Historical Tidbit: Evacuation & St Patrick's Day
As New Englanders, we know that Massachusetts is essentially the foundation on which the country was built. Home not only to some of the oldest cities in the country, but the people that made it a country in the first place. As a main legislative theater for the American Revolution, the city of Boston is filled with Revolutionary history, this week we commemorate March 17, Evacuation Day.
Evacuation day was General and future First President George Washington’s first victorious battle of the war against the British on March 17th, 1776. In addition, Bostonians were the first to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in North America. On March 17, 1737, Boston’s Irish community joined together in festivities of their homeland and to honor the Patron Saint of Ireland. There were banquets and parades.
So in 1901, when the parade moved to the robust Irish South Boston, given the significance of both the St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day holidays; the annual parade became a dual-hatted celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and commemoration of Evacuation Day.
As the Irish, serving in Boston in Police and Fire Departments and governmental positions, were a strong political force solidifying this holiday as a county-wide day off.
Since 1938, Evacuation Day has been recognized as a day off for Suffolk County government offices and schools, giving all Bostonians the opportunity to celebrate either St. Patrick's Day or Evacuation Day, whichever sings to you the loudest.

Climate Can-Do:
Help Our Community Reduce Plastic Bag Usage
When we go to the grocery store, we're not typically focused on how we're bringing our goods home. We browse the aisles, putting item after item into our cart, and eventually make our way to the checkout line. Placing groceries on the conveyor belt, we watch the cashier scan items, then place them into bags, often those thin plastic bags. When we get home, we put our purchases away, grab the plastic bags, and what happens next?
Massachusetts residents are estimated to use more than 2 billion plastic bags every year. That means that on average, every Massachusetts person uses a plastic bag every single day! While plastic is versatile, lightweight, inexpensive, and waterproof, this has lead to overuse and the creation of serious problems. Plastic is a synthetic material that does not biodegrade; once it enters the environment, it stays there forever! Bringing reusable bags only cuts back our individual use. We are now dealing with microplastics in our drinking water. These bags are a problem.
A solution: as of May 2022, 154 of the 292 cities and towns in Massachusetts have cut back single use by regulating plastic shopping bags. This number represents over 4 million people, which is about two-thirds of the state’s population. A few of our hives are represented in this number, including Bridgewater, Halifax, and Whitman! If you want to get a plastic bag ban passed in your community, reach out to your local elected officials, and local trails, beautification, garden clubs, and conservation commissions to generate support.
This Climate Can-Do Article was written by intern Tess Fiumefreddo of Franklin & Marshall College. We focus on actions which will help mitigate the environmental changes of our climate emergency. We can do!

50+ Job Seekers in MA
Statewide Networking Groups
Over sixty libraries across Massachusetts, including Raynham Public Library, have partnered to offer the 50+ Job Seekers Networking Group program. The 50+ Job Seekers in Massachusetts program was created for the “forgotten job seekers” – those in the 50+ demographic who find themselves unemployed, retired, or trying to re-enter the workforce after a lengthy employment gap.
All of these individuals, regardless of the circumstances, are all dealing with issues of age discrimination during their job search/employment process, in addition to all the challenges that anyone in career transition faces: stress, anxiety, fear, low self-esteem, self-doubt, lack of purpose, concern about the future.
|
|
The 50+ program provides 50+ job seekers with robust materials, strategies, content, and guidance to network and navigate their way through a successful job search. They’re taught how to network and use research tools, as well as how to overcome ageism embedded in the online application process; they can learn how to create a resume and elevator pitch to combat age stereotypes.
Raynham Public Library offers this free program biweekly on Zoom and is facilitated by Debbi Hope, MBA, PCIC, MC, an experienced Executive Career Coach and Certified Master Coach. The Zoom room opens 30 minutes early for informal networking & resource sharing. Registration is required for each individual session, and you can register for morning sessions here or evening sessions here. The next available session is Wednesday, March 8th, and the topic is Developing a Resume!
To ask any questions or for help to register, call (508) 823-1344. You can find more information on the group’s website by 50plusjobseekers.org. Thanks to Raynham Public Library for joining this group!

Hope is not a thing of childish dreaming... no, it is a powerful tool by which we change the world. We decide each day how to view things, how to move forward.
I choose to have hope. Hope in the goodness of humanity, hope that together we can find solutions and make choices healthy for all of us.
Hopefully yours, Jacquie
