Historical Tidbit:
Veterans Day

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
*Veterans Day occurs on November 11 every year in the United States. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and World War II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November).
In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.

Supporting Inclusive Friendships
Tue, Nov 9th
7 - 8:30p
Free webinar join on Zoom: bit.ly/MERGEfriendships
This week I got a preview of the content for our next webinar on inclusive friendships on November 9th, and I was blown away. The content made me cry. The webinar is full of hope–hope that our kids with special needs really can be included by their peers.

Finally, here's a workshop that clearly explains why our kids with special needs are in need of real friends and gives practical, real-life advice to all families for how best to foster those friendships. You'll hear stories of actual inclusive friendships that have lasted into adulthood (one from nearby Whitman), learn how to talk about disabilities, and come away with strategies for our kids' friendships.

You need to invite families you know to this event, especially families without special needs. Their kids can come too. Inclusion won't happen without them. Let's make a new way forward together...one in
which our kids have real friends and real inclusion.

Honoring Veterans.
Their Sacrifices; Their Lives:

Meditating on how we do this best... we thank them; take care of them; follow their example, living our lives for community; and we keep a vigilant eye on what our nation asks of our current service men and women.

With this in mind I share this quote from a former president, referring to his visits to military hospitals:

“...I was never more clear-eyed than on the flights back from Walter Reed and Bethesda. Clear about the true costs of war, and who bore those costs. Clear about war’s folly, the sorry tales we humans collectively store in our heads and pass on from generation to generation - abstractions that fan hate and justify cruelty and force even the righteous among us to participate in carnage. Clear that by virtue of my office, I could not avoid responsibility for lives lost or shattered, even if I somehow justified my decisions by what I perceived to be some larger good.”
~ Barack Obama, A Promised Land
My heartfelt thanks to our Veterans... including my dad, uncles, the mom of my grandchildren, and many dear friends. I hope I work toward a world where we can war no more. Nameste.
