Teacher Appreciation Week

While we appreciate our educators all year long, they received a little extra love this week in honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10). As a District, we would like to thank all of our incredible teachers for their unwavering dedication, hard work, patience, and tireless efforts to shape the minds of our students.

Over the last two weeks, we have asked students, staff, parents, and community members to submit messages of gratitude and appreciation for our staff. We were excited to receive almost 300 messages of love and support.

Student Built House Open House

After 119 days of dedication and hard work, twenty-two CRCSD high school students are putting the finishing touches on this year's Student Built House. Located at 344 Worthington Ct, Hiawatha, this new home is a testament to teamwork, ingenuity, and the power of hands-on education. In total, the students poured almost 7,600 hours of labor into the 2,350-square-foot home. This marks the 51st Student Build Home to be completed by the program.

Since its inception in 1972, the Student Built House Program has provided a unique opportunity for students to merge their classroom learning with real-world experiences. The students get hands-on experience in construction but also get to apply things they have learned in mathematics, communication, reading, and science. They also develop essential life skills such as work ethic, problem-solving, and responsibility.

A Community Open House is planned for 3:30-6:30 PM on May 16th to celebrate their achievement and showcase their handiwork. Community members are invited to tour the home, meet the student builders, and witness firsthand the fruits of their labor. For those who find themselves enamored with what they see, the home is currently listed with Jesse Arp of Skogman Realty.

Senior Walks

The Cedar Rapids Community Schools Foundation is excited to announce the 2024 series of Senior Walks. This annual tradition allows seniors to take a trip down memory lane before they walk across the stage to get their diplomas. During the designated times, the graduating seniors will wear their caps and gowns and return to the elementary school where they began their CRCSD education journey. They will then walk through the school halls, greeting the elementary students and catching up with their former teachers. This year's senior walks will take place between May 14 - 22.

Arthur and Garfield Open Houses Reflections

The atmosphere at the Arthur and Garfield Elementary School open house was filled with warmth and nostalgia as the community came together to bid farewell to these two beloved institutions. Last Saturday morning, past and present students, staff, and families gathered to reminisce about the cherished memories made within those walls over the past century. It was heartwarming to see hundreds of people take a stroll down memory lane, sharing stories and laughter as they toured the buildings and explored over 100 years of memorabilia. As we prepare to merge and relocate to the new Trailside Elementary School in August, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate the rich history of Arthur and Garfield Elementary. Thank you for making this open house a truly special and memorable event.
