Dear Friends,

Effective today, April 15, 2024, I have retired as Honorary Consul of Ireland in Seattle, and Bernard J. Hensey has been nominated to be my replacement. I wish every success to Bernard and am ready to assist him in whatever way I can as he assumes the responsibility of being Honorary Consul of Ireland in Seattle.

During the interim period between my retirement and Bernard’s appointment being formally completed, the Irish Consulate in San Francisco is assuming consular responsibility for Washington State.

For now, any consular enquiries should be sent directly to the Irish Consulate in San Francisco, either via email to, via telephone to 415-392-4214, or via the Consulate’s contact page at

It has been my distinct joy and privilege to serve as Honorary Consul of Ireland in Seattle since I was nominated in 2009. I’m tremendously proud and honored to have been able to represent Ireland and am immensely grateful for the opportunity.

I’ve had dealings with every Consul General and Vice-Consul who has served in the San Francisco Irish Consulate since the early 1980s and I have always been tremendously impressed with the quality of the individuals who represent Ireland, with their knowledge and professionalism.

It’s been a distinct pleasure interacting with current Consul General Micheál Smith and Vice-Consul Jennifer Chadwick during their time in San Francisco. I sincerely thank them and their staff for their assistance and support and wish them every success in the future.

Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to this area’s Irish community, and especially the Irish Heritage Club, for its generous support and encouragement over the years which has made serving as Honorary Consul a particular pleasure.

Míle Buíochas – A Thousand Thanks

John F. Keane
