Suppression System Malfunction Cover up at (Taiwan) Nuke Plant

7/22/16

By Chen Wei-han, Staff Reporter
Taipei Times

The Pingtung County Government accused Ma-anshan (馬鞍山) Nuclear Power Plant management of covering up safety incidents and evading government oversight and media scrutiny in the aftermath of repeated fire system malfunctions.

The county government criticized the plant management for failing to report or delaying the reporting of several safety incidents, as well as not clearly recounting the incidents in the reports or trying to downplay their severity.

Pingtung County Government spokesman Huang Chien-chia (黃建嘉) said the fire suppression system at the plant was triggered for unknown reasons and released carbon dioxide in March, but the county government did not receive a report from the plant.

UTAS Engineering Brains-Trust Tackles Problems For OEMs
The UTC Aerospace Systems advanced icing wind tunnel in Burnsville, Minnesota, is capable of simulating airspeeds up to Mach 0.9, air temperature down to -76 deg F and altitudes up to 47,000 feet. The extreme testing environment enables UTC to develop its sensor product portfolio for improved performance in the most demanding environmental conditions.

AIN Online

Four years on from the merger that brought Goodrich and Hamilton Sundstrand together to form UTC Aerospace Systems (UTAS), the combined group has quietly established itself as the industry's largest and most diverse systems specialist. With annual revenues of around $14.3 billion, UTAS is about twice as large as any of its rivals and at a pre-Farnborough show press briefing, its president David Gitlin predicted that it will sustain an average annual compound growth rate of around 6 percent, due mainly to the fact that on new aircraft programs such as the Bombardier C Series and the new Boeing Max and Airbus Neo narrowbodies, it has around twice the equipment content as on the aircraft these are replacing.

For today's complex aircraft programs, UTAS is firmly of the conviction that bigger is better when it comes to being able to deliver strong engineering resources. "The big OEMs are looking for partners with the capability to step up and deal with complex programs and be able to reach for whatever technology they need," said engineering v-p Geoff Hunt.

Tyco International Sets Date for Expected Completion of Johnson Controls Merger

7/21/16

StreetInsider

Tyco International plc announced that it expects to close its merger with Johnson Controls, Inc. on September 2, 2016. The company also announced that its Board of Directors has declared an accelerated dividend of $0.23 per ordinary share, payable on August 26, 2016, to shareholders of record at the close of NYSE trading on August 5, 2016.

The accelerated dividend is in addition to the regular third quarter dividend scheduled to be paid on August 17, 2016 to shareholders of record on July 22, 2016. This accelerated dividend pulls forward the quarterly dividend that Tyco would have declared in its fiscal fourth quarter, and is intended to align dividend payments made to shareholders of Tyco and Johnson Controls prior to the closing of the merger. Closing of the merger is contingent upon, among other things, the approval of proposals related to the merger by shareholders of each company. The special meetings for shareholders of Tyco and Johnson Controls are scheduled for August 17, 2016.

Navy Checks for PFC Contamination at Shuttered Airbase

7/10/16

By Kevin Miller, Staff Writer
Portland Press Herald

The voluntary tests are aimed at detecting whether a chemical used in firefighting foam and household products - perfluorinated compounds, or PFCs - is migrating beyond contaminated areas on the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.

BRUNSWICK, ME -- The Navy has tested several dozen residential wells on the outskirts of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station for the presence of a chemical suspected of posing health risks.

Officials from the Navy and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection say the voluntary water tests are aimed at determining whether the chemicals - perfluorinated compounds, or PFCs - are migrating in groundwater beyond known contamination sites on the former air base. Formerly a common ingredient in flame suppressants and household products such as nonstick cookware, PFCs have been shown to affect organ function in animals and are being intensely studied for impacts on humans.

honeywellIs Honeywell Headed for a Breakup?

7/25/16

By Brooke Sutherland
BloombergGadfly

You could be forgiven for overlooking it, but Honeywell did have some other news for shareholders besides its underwhelming sales outlook.

The $88 billion company is splitting its automation and control division into two separate businesses, with one focused on safety and productivity products like rugged mobile computers, sensors and hard hats and another focused on building technologies like HVAC and fire-safety systems. For now, this is just an internal reorganization that Honeywell says will make each business more nimble and help streamline decision-making processes. And honestly, it makes a lot of sense -- safety goggles don't seem to have a whole lot to do with air conditioners. But could this be a prelude to a more significant breakup?

Sometimes the world really can get together and avert a major ecological catastrophe before it's too late. Case in point: A new study in Science finds evidence that the Earth's protective ozone layer is finally healing - all thanks to global efforts in the 1980s to phase out CFCs and other destructive chemicals.

This is one of the great environmental success stories of all time. Back in the 1970s, scientists first realized that we were rapidly depleting Earth's stratospheric ozone layer, which protects us from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

marineAre We Safe (From Fire) at Sea? Marine Industry Cutting Corners?

7/15/16

By Carl Stephen Patrick Hunter
The Maritime Executive

Fire protection remains an "ungoverned space" within the maritime industry. There are are too few qualified engineers who may be considered subject matter experts in marine fire engineering, and too often, marine fire protection is seen as a cost than an investment and something vital to the overall business activity of the customer. A "safety first" culture often remains both un-pursued and unrewarded.

In terms of ships extinguishing systems there exist two broad categories: sprinkler systems and gas systems. The former can suffer leakage, but the latter can cause catastrophic effect given its physical pressures. Overall, the value of the marine assets that fire systems protect is increasing rapidly but the competitive nature of the free market in the fire and marine industry places great pressure on it to deliver systems which often only minimally comply with the regulations and deliver the asset protection at the most economical cost.
