AUG 2023

August was a vibrant month for Habitat LA, brimming with pride, unity, and fresh faces! We welcomed new members to our Board of Directors, marched alongside our beloved community at the Long Beach Pride Parade, and empowered future community leaders.

Gear up, our Home Builder’s Blitz is on the horizon. Get ready to build homes with us in Lancaster! Plus, don’t miss out on our exciting back-to-school deals at the ReStore.

And most importantly, let's send our heartfelt prayers and support to Habitat for Humanity Maui as they begin the long journey to rebuild after the devastating fires.

Get Ready for the 2023 Home Builder’s Blitz!

Calling all Supporters in Lancaster

This October, we will start an 8-home development in Lancaster, with three of the homes being built through our 2023 Home Builder’s Blitz. We need your support! We’re calling all subcontractors, volunteers, donors, and families in Antelope Valley to join us by making donations and volunteering your time. Your hard work will help put us on the path to developing a new community of homes for local residents and families in the city of Lancaster.

If you or anyone you know is in Lancaster or the greater Antelope Valley area, send them our way! Click here to donate or email Anna Rubino-Jeffries at arubino@habitatla.org for details on how to volunteer.

Welcome, Welcome! We have New Board Members

Home is Love at 40th Long Beach Pride Parade

We Marched with Pride!

Joining the 40th Annual Long Beach Pride Parade was a landmark event for Habitat LA! It was our parade debut, and we passionately conveyed that "Home is Love." Marching alongside LGBTQ+ organizations and allies, we distributed fans and flags to the enthusiastic crowds along Ocean Blvd. Thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers, we championed the idea that homeownership is attainable for everyone!  The colorful festival is an emblem of the Long Beach community, representing visibility, equality, and acceptance.

Celebrating Local Business Owners in LA!

Recognizing Black Business Month

This month, we recognize Black-owned businesses that we love working with such as Chef Notasha Butler of The Butler Pantry Catering Co. We've been working with Notasha since the 2021 Home Builder’s Blitz and she has become one of our go-to caterers!

Los Angeles is full of Black-owned businesses and cultural hubs offering great dining, fashion, health & wellness, professional services, and so much more! We encourage you to branch out and infuse your daily life with a few. On Discover LA’s Guide to Black-Owned Business, you may find your next favorite cup of coffee, or an awesome museum to enjoy with the family! You can also let us know a few of your favorites – message us at @habitatla on Instagram

Congratulations to the 6th Community Navigators Cohort

Building Future Community Leaders!

At Habitat LA we empower people and build future leaders! We are proud to congratulate the participants of the 6th Community Navigator cohort in the Washington Neighborhood. Members of our Programs team, Mayra Murillo, Helena Gutierrez, and Melissa Morales took this opportunity to celebrate and recognize the Safe Passage volunteers for this school year. The dedicated volunteers participated in important community activities that foster a sense of community, social cohesion and collective impact in the Washington neighborhood. The Navigators and Safe Passage volunteers received special recognition for their work from Long Beach City Councilmember Mary Zendejas and Senator Lena A. Gonzalez.

Let’s Help Rebuild Maui Together!

Make a Profound Difference with Your Donation

On August 8th, catastrophic fires spread through three cities on Maui Island: Kula, Kihei, and Lahaina. These disastrous fires caused families, businesses, and whole communities to lose virtually everything overnight. Your generosity is vital to helping these communities re-build. We're asking the Habitat LA community to join us in helping Habitat for Humanity Maui as they start to re-build. Together we can make a difference and help rebuild homes, lives, and dreams on Maui.

Long Beach Gives is On the Horizon!

Fundraise with Your Peers

Long Beach Gives is the city’s annual day of online giving happening September 21, 2023. The 24-hour online fundraiser supports organizations serving the city of Long Beach, and it provides an easy and fun way to give together through Peer-to-Peer Fundraising. We are thrilled to be a part of this year’s campaign, but we can’t do it alone. Join Habitat LA by signing up as a volunteer Peer Fundraiser or by donating – just click here.

Peer-to-Peer fundraisers (P2P) are members of the community, or businesses, who raise funds on behalf of causes by creating custom fundraising pages on the Long Beach Gives website. Share your page with your network of friends and family. Need help setting up a P2P page? We provide virtual training sessions at your convenience. Perk Alert: Prizes will be awarded to our P2P (Peer-to-Peer) Fundraisers, which will be announced during training.

Together, we can make Long Beach shine brighter than ever before! Contact Jennifer Ramirez at jramirez@habitatla.org for more information and to sign up!

Our Faith Community Helps Build at Isabel Villas

Thanks for Volunteering, West LA United Methodist Church!

Thank you, West Los Angeles United Methodist Church and Faith United Methodist Church of Torrance, for helping us build affordable homes! Twenty volunteers from both congregations came out to Isabel Villas in South Los Angeles to paint and build homes! Each church has been building with us since 2011 in Los Angeles, Culver City, Lynwood, Long Beach, and more. We are so grateful for their ongoing support!
