Home renovations can be a very stressful undertaking, not only emotionally, but financially as well. Falling prey to a home improvement scam can add exponential strain during renovations.

The most frequent home improvement scams are roofing repairs, driveway paving and chimney repairs.
Some scammers will go door to door insisting they see something wrong with your house that needs fixing. They offer a good deal, more so if you pay with cash.

Typically they make you pay up front, then they leave without completing the job. These scammers are hard to trace as they work under fake company names and do not leave any contact information.
Other scammers could be contractors that you seek. Once they start major renovations on your house, they leave you high and dry.   They demand that you pay all or half up front, as a policy.   Some will even ask for money for materials that they don't buy, and simply keep the money.

They never finish the job and the victim is left with an unfinished renovation and without money or the supplies they thought they had bought.

Furthermore, contractors have scammed homeowners by buying low quality supplies and materials but telling the homeowner that they are high quality, and charging them much more than what the supplies are worth.
To avoid becoming a victim of a home improvement scam, research the contractor online, ask for references, and ask for a written contract beforehand. Set out the work to be done, the supplies needed and the price.  Avoid paying with cash and pay with a credit card instead.
