CUHSD TEACHER AND STAFF FIRE RELIEF FUND - A GOFUNDME EFFORT

A message from CUHSD Board President Kalen Gallagher:
Our thoughts are with the Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD) educators and staff members impacted by the destructive wildfires burning across our region. Sadly, some have already lost their homes and many others are facing the costs of a long evacuation. As a community, we are inviting you to please donate to support our staff in their time of need. DEADLINE: We will be accepting donations through Tuesday, September 1st at 11:59 P.M.
No donation amount is too small and all money will directly go to CUHSD teachers and employees impacted. If you have already provided monetary donations to your school’s principal’s secretary, the funds will be deposited to this GoFundMe account unless otherwise instructed.

Thank you for your ongoing support as our teachers and staff continue to navigate one of the most difficult starts to the school year that any of us have ever encountered. Stories of teachers literally teaching classes from their cars as they evacuated their homes last week demonstrate just how difficult it's been and how much they are doing to be there for our students. Now is our time to be there for them.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE AUGUST 2020 HSC MEETING
Highlights from Student Leadership:

  • The Leadership class is collaborating with the “Bring Change to Mind” club to have a Wellness Week for the school, focusing on mental health.

  • The first “Student Voice” meeting of the year will be in September.

  • Leadership class is working on a “Teacher and Staff Introduction Video”. This will be posted on YouTube and emailed to the student body.

Highlights from Principal Kara Butler:
THANK YOU TO THE LEIGH HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY!

  • Our intrepid Leigh students seem excited to be back in school, and our teachers and staff are excited to see them all. THANK YOU for the tremendous effort our teachers and staff have put into getting ready for school to begin smoothly.

  • Another giant THANK YOU to our staff and parent volunteers who gathered, organized, and distributed over 1800 bags of books and supplies for our students to pick up!

  • We are gearing up to present virtual versions of events that normally take place this time of year, including College Night and Back to School Night. Please continue to read Kara Butler's Weekly Parent Bulletins carefully for news and developments.

Highlights from Teacher Representative Celeste Smiley:
WE LOVE SEEING OUR STUDENTS!

  • The teaching team at Leigh wants to recognize and thank the CUHSD Board for their willingness over the summer to hear our concerns about teaching in the time of COVID and working with us to find solutions to begin this school year safely and effectively.

  • Also, a big THANK YOU to our parents for encouraging students to attend classes as usual and keeping cameras on as much as possible. Seeing our students' faces makes an enormous difference in the interaction, especially as we meet our new students this semester.

Highlights from CUHSD Board President Kalen Gallagher:

  • Kalen is Leigh Home & School Club's Board Buddy this year and will attend our HSC meetings each month.

  • Parent feedback is helpful to the school board as they work to make distance learning the best it can be. Kalen encourages parents to participate in the CUHSD Thought Exchange. Parents can also reach Kalen via email at kgallagher@cuhsd.org.

  • The district budget has been reduced because of the economic downturn. It is going to be a tough couple of years financially. The economic difficulties are compounded by Measure K not having passed in March. We currently have an $85 parcel tax that brings about $5 million to our budget every year, but it is set to expire at the end of the 2022-23 school year. This would bring an additional $5 million in cuts to the district budget on top of the cuts they are going to have to make in 2020-21 and 2021-22 because of COVID. As a result, the school board is putting a measure (called Measure L) on the November ballot to ask voters to renew the $85 parcel tax when it expires.

A message from CUHSD:
THOUGHT EXCHANGE - PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEY!

Throughout the months of August and September, CUHSD is soliciting feedback from students, parents and staff to create the LCAP. Part of the engagement process is launching a ThoughtExchange to gather input on the District’s current priorities to improve online learning for all students. As of Sunday, August 30, the top thoughts in the ThoughtExchange included:

  • Prioritizing providing high quality, rigorous instruction
  • Prioritizing technology access and training
  • Promoting methods to increase student connections and community building
  • Prioritizing mental health supports for students struggling with anxiety and depression

The CUHSD community can participate in the ThoughtExchange by clicking here.
DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 3
