Highlights from the February 2020 HSC Meeting

Principal Kara Butler shared the following updates:
  • Leigh's WASC visit is complete. WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) is an organization that provides accreditation of public and private universities, colleges, secondary and elementary schools in California. They will provide their Visiting Committee Report in about six weeks. To prepare for this visit, Leigh staff created a Self-Study report which examines and evaluates the entire academic and extra-curricular program at Leigh. This report can be found here, and more info on the process here. (According to Stacey Brown, CUHSD Board Trustee, who attended our HSC meeting, "this report is one of the best reports I have ever read. It really encapsulates what Leigh is about.").

  • The Leadership class is working to help our campus celebrate and embrace diversity. They are working hand in hand with our various clubs to elevate awareness. Interviews are being scheduled now for students interested in joining Leadership next year.

  • We're all looking forward to the Spring rally and Senior send-off.

  • Should be: We are preparing for the PSAT10 in March for sophomores, the CAASPP testing in April for juniors, and the AP tests for all AP students in May.

  • Once we have met with every student, each student's requested classes for Fall 2020 will be mailed to your student's home address. Parents and students will have the chance to change requested classes at this time. After that, the master scheduling process will begin and class schedules will be distributed in August right before school resumes.
Ms. Celeste Smiley provided a Teachers' Update. Read her entire report here , some highlights below:
  • AP and elective tutorials were held in January for 3 weeks so students could learn more about curriculum and expectations prior to completing their course requests.

  • With funding from the Home & School Club, we launched our READ campaign. Check out the posters around campus and in the library windows of your favorite teachers presenting their favorite books. The campaign has been effective in getting students talking about books and reading!
  • The 2020 yearbook is available for pre-sale, and Senior baby ads/Senior salutations are for sale. Info is available in SchoolLoop and was sent out via the Senior Newsletter.

  • Academic Highlights

  • Econ is working on personal finance modules

  • English 1 students completed creative graphic representations of their SSR books to persuade classmates to read their chosen novels.
  • A group of our Science students competed in the Science Bowl for the very first time. This was a great experience for our students who are now motivated to put together official teams and compete again next year.

  • In our Psychology classes, we had a guest speaker from Google present to us about the future of jobs, including the role that Psychology careers will play.
  • Club Highlights

  • Science Olympiad attended the GGSO Invitational on Saturday. Gold Team placed 35th and Green Team 43rd out of 55 teams. They placed 13th for Protein Modeling.
  • GSA hosted a successful presentation and discussion about the Stonewall Riots and Marsha P Johnson's contributions to the LGBT Rights Movement. Today they will be doing a presentation on what different flags are in the LGBT community and their meanings.

  • Bring Change to Mind club president Lauryn Mineta spoke at the State of the District about how the club is helping bring awareness to Mental Health at Leigh.

Measure K is on the
March 3rd ballot. Your vote matters!

Our Leigh Home & School Club supports the campaign to Vote YES on Measure K on the March 3rd, 2020 ballot. With the high cost of housing in Silicon Valley, passing Measure K will enable Campbell Union High School District to raise teacher salaries and attract and retain great teachers here at Leigh.

Without Measure K, we will continue to lose our best teachers to nearby districts that have more funding for teacher pay or to lower-cost areas of the state. We cannot attract the highest quality teachers unless we pay a competitive salary. When it comes time to hire a new teacher, we need to make sure we have the best candidates possible. Go to www.voteyesonmeasurek.org for more information.

We need 66.7% support to pass, which means we need every single school supporter to vote YES on Measure K!

Most HSC tasks are done from home and do not require you to be at school. We have tasks that require some effort, and tasks that require minimal effort. All skills and interests are needed! We have a variety of projects such as ... project planning, community building, financial management, communications, fundraising, gardening, writing, technology support, volunteer coordination, College & Career Center support etc. If you have a skill you'd like to share or you are someone who just likes to get stuff done, please get in touch! We also need parents for once-off projects such as Student Registration Support in August, the Stampede 5K Run/Walk in May, and Senior Grad Night in June.
