Welcome to Leigh!

Parent Orientation for our newly entering students was a great success! We heard from a few families who are new to Leigh, and were excited to share their enthusiasm with us after orientation:

"I was so energized leaving the new parent orientation!
Our first encounter was so invigorating, I find myself wanting to be on campus.
It's clear this school has so much to offer to our children and our community,
I'm excited to be a part of it!"

"The parent/student panels were great.
I loved hearing from the students and getting their advice."

"Orientation really helped me feel so good about Leigh.
I was nervous about my kid going off to high school,
but after meeting some students and teachers, and hearing from Ms. Butler,
I felt great about our decision to attend LHS.
And so far, my son is having a great experience!"
A Thank You Message from Principal Butler

Thank you to all of the parents who helped during the registration process. We had many parents helping guide the students as they submitted their paperwork and we had parents available in the library to help families complete the online Aeries process. We would not have been able to provide all of this support without their time and dedication to Leigh. It made a huge difference in our opening.
A Report from our Teachers

Ms. Celeste Smiley is the teacher rep for Home & School Club. At each meeting, she shares what is happening in the classrooms and other general info related to the teachers. Here's this month's teacher's report »

Free Youth Heart Screening at Leigh on Saturday, October 19th

Leigh High School is hosting the first annual Kyle J. Taylor Foundation Youth Heart Screening on Saturday, October 19th (in the gym at Leigh).

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading killers of teenagers whether they are athletes or not. Our FamLeigh lost 2017 graduate Kyle Taylor to SCA in 2018.

CLICK HERE to sign up for a free screening, and to complete the information needed prior to the screening. Space is limited, so don't wait to reserve your spot. Students will have an EKG administered by a licensed medical professional. If further information is needed, families will be referred to their physician. If you have any additional questions regarding the screening, please reach out to the Kyle J. Taylor Foundation at kylejtaylorfoundation@gmail.com.

CLICK HERE to sign up to volunteer . Volunteers are needed to help with set up on Friday, October 18th, from 5-7pm and to help with tasks such as check-in and clean up on Saturday, October 19th, from 8am - 6pm. This is for general volunteers, if you have a medical background and would like to help in that way, email us at kylejtaylorfoundation@gmail.com

Why is this important? Right now, 1 in 300 students have an undiagnosed heart condition that puts them at risk for SCA. Heart screenings are not currently a part of regular well-child checkups or pre-participation sport physicals, despite the fact that studies show the standard non-cardio focused approach to youth checkups misses 90% of youth at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. EKGs have been shown to be the most effective screening tool. The stethoscope was invented 200 years ago: the fact is that heart conditions that may trigger SCA can only be seen, not heard. That’s why international guidelines recommend youth be screened every two years through age 25. For more information, please visit the Kyle J. Taylor Foundation website.

Volunteer Opportunities

Parent volunteers are needed for a variety of school-wide programs and activities. Please know that even a few hours of your time can make a tremendous difference. Each of our Board members and Committee Chairs works with a team of volunteers and there are many opportunities available both on and off campus.

Please go to our volunteer form and select all of the options that interest you. The committee chairperson will contact you to share information and list specific tasks that you can then sign up for. The options available are listed below for your reference.

LONGHORN STAMPEDE 5K PLANNING/PREPARATION-- The Stampede will be held on May 30th, 2020, and is a community event for our school and neighborhood. It encompasses all of our boosters: HSC (community building), Sports Boosters (running/walking), PAPA (music on the course) and Spirit (Cheerleaders on the course & campus). Proceeds are divided between all 4 boosters. There are many tasks, big and small, in the months leading up to the event including hanging flyers, advertising to local gyms and youth groups, purchasing snacks for the event, sourcing sponsorship, managing the website, hanging tow signs, helping at Packet Pick Up, and many more tasks, big and small. Whatever your interest or skillset and whatever your time availability, there is a task to match! Photos and details here.

LONGHORN STAMPEDE 5K DAY OF VOLUNTEERING-- Sign up to help out on the day (May 30th, 2020). Lots of opportunities available: course marshall, set up, clean up, registration table, costume contest, water station etc. Choose your specific task closer to the event. Photos from the day of the event here.

COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER -- Under the direction of the Leigh CCC Counselor, volunteers assist students in locating information regarding colleges and universities, in finding SAT and ACT dates and registration information, in discovering scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and by answering questions about the college preparation and application processes. Also provide resources for students who may be looking at vocational and job opportunities after high school. You would volunteer in the CCC during tutorial or lunch once per week or once every other week during the school year. More info on the CCC here.

STAFF APPRECIATION & HOSPITALITY -- Volunteers will be asked to provide refreshments for staff during the school year. There will be individual sign-up sheets sent to you for each event and you choose what you wish to make or buy and then drop it off to the school.

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION -- Participate in various landscaping, painting, or other beautification projects on the Leigh campus. The time commitment is four hours (or whatever time you can give) on one or two Saturdays per year. Our first clean up day is Oct 26th. See details above.

GRAD NIGHT COORDINATION-- Support the Grad Night team by helping with fundraising, selling tickets and other needed tasks to ensure a fun event for our seniors on their last day of school. Parents in all grade levels are encouraged to volunteer. More info here.

CAP & GOWN DISTRIBUTION - Senior parents needed for 2-3 hours during last week of school to distribute caps & gowns to seniors. Exact date and time TBD.

NOT SURE where to volunteer? Or have an idea as to something else you would like to do? Select this option on the volunteer form and we will be in touch to chat through the possibilities. Whatever your interest or skillset and whatever your time availability, there is a role for you!
