Holy Week is the last week of Lent and the week preceding Easter Sunday. During Holy Week, we remember the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the importance of the Last Supper with his disciples, and his suffering, death, burial and resurrection.

Central United Methodist Church Worship Design Team developed the idea of a Holy Week Devotional. Special thanks to John Southall, Madge Owens, and Scherrie Simon for creating this daily Holy Week devotion that allows you to read scripture, pray and listen to music that expresses the importance of this Holy Season.

PALM SUNDAY

The community of people exalted the Lord during Jesus' triumphant

 entry into Jerusalem.

Matthew 21: 1-11

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father God, we praise your Holy Name!! We praise you for the triumphant entry of your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, into Jerusalem and bringing new hope to your people. Jesus came humbly, riding on a donkey, proclaiming peace. We pray for Christ-centered unity among those who are in Christ, and for peace in our spirit, our home, our family, our community of faith, and in our world. Make us vessels of your peace and guide us in our ministry. Thank you for blessing us with a body of believers who Exalt the Lord and are continuously striving to be a blessing to our surrounding community and beyond. Prince of Peace, Mighty God, Holy King, there is none like you. In Jesus Name we pray, Amen.
