DIGITAL SURVEY- our initial Synodal activity
For those who did not have the chance to submit the brief synodal survey form last Sunday at Mass, you can do so digitally. Click here for a brief survey. Then download, fill and email back to
Thank you!
What is this Synod all about?
The word synod itself is Greek and literally means “a journey together.”
Synods are as old as the Church, and from the beginning were the chief way that the Holy Spirit guided the Catholic Church in making important decisions about faith and morals, and the Church Herself. In the early centuries of the Christianity especially, but at various times in later centuries as well, these universal synods or councils involved the bishops of the Church and addressed the most fundamental doctrinal, moral and ecclesial issues. These synods or councils were usually in response to some sort of crisis in the Church, particularly in terms of the truths of our faith not being properly taught in some circles.
Over time, with the most fundamental teachings of our faith being well established, synods became less common and when they occurred were concerned with the pastoral applications of those universal teachings. Recently synods have become more common and have focused on themes such as the family, the Eucharist, consecrated life, the role of the laity, youth, social justice, and the New Evangelization.
Theme of Synod 2023
This synod is a bit different from previous synods. It’s not so much about a “what” as a “how.” How are we journeying together as a Church? The preparatory document for the synod has phrased the fundamental question in this way:
A synodal Church, in announcing the Gospel, “journeys together.” How is this “journeying together” happening in your particular Church? What steps does the Spirit invite us to take in order to grow in our “journeying together?”
The role of all the faithful
We begin with our Catholic understanding of how the Holy Spirit works – that the Holy Spirit is active in unique ways in all members of the Church, be they pope, bishop, clergy, religious, or layperson. What is the Holy Spirit saying to us at this juncture of time? How does the Church as a whole discern the direction that the Holy Spirit is leading us?
The Diocesan Phase
The synod itself will meet in 2023. However, leading up to this event will be an extensive consultation process in all of the dioceses of the world. Now in this initial stage, parishes in the archdioceses will be holding listening gatherings with a wide range of people to share their experience of “journeying together.” We will be discerning where the Holy Spirit is leading us to grow in our “journeying together.” These gatherings are your opportunity to share your experience of “journeying together”, with the aim of helping in that discernment.
The destination of the input from the Diocesan Phase
The results of these listening gatherings will be compiled here in the Archdiocese, then forwarded to the Assembly of Western Catholic Bishops. The assembly will synthesize all of the reports from the various dioceses, then will forward it to the Secretariat of the Synod in Rome. This will help in the preparation of the working document for the actual synod proceedings in October 2023, which several bishops, representing all the bishops of the United States will attend.
The input and synthesis will also be shared across the Archdiocese in the spring of 2022.

Celebrating Fr Joseph's birthday
Last Sunday, April 3, the parish celebrated our beloved pastor's birthday. Here is Fr Joseph's note regarding the synodal survey and his thank you note to those who came to celebrate his birthday:
Dear St A’s Family,
Thank all to those who participated in the Synodal survey on Sunday. If you forgot to turn in your response after the Mass, you can send it in via email at SaintAntoninusChurch@gmail.com . Download the survey digitally ( see previous section)
I would also like to thank you for blessing me with all the delicious food and joyful fellowship together after Mass as you pre-empted my birthday (by 3 days). Thank you too for the beautiful slide show in church. I wanted to get a picture with all of my fellow April birthday “siblings”, but I forgot.
I send out a special thank you to all those faithful volunteers who always jump in to help in some way, and thank you also to those who are the newest members of the parish who jumped in to help. You all warm this pastor’s heart in a very special way, regardless of the celebration.
I look forward to celebrating these holy days with all of you.
During the Easter Season, I also look forward to a followup tof our initial synodal survey through small group gatherings after Mass (with food of course) to get to know each other again post-covid, and dream a little about where we go from here at St A’s. Come Holy Spirit, show us the way!
In Jesus thru Mary & St Joseph,
Fr Joseph

We have added a video series by Dr. Brant Pitre to our Tuesday Night Scripture Study. Join us in person and on Zoom! Start with the Rosary at 7pm (Rosary every nite at 7pm), then the Scripture Study starts at 8pm.
|
|
A note about Dr Pitre:
Dr Brant Pitre is a renowned & insightful Bible scholar.
What blessing it is to listen to Dr Pitre's study on the Mass readings, to " be instructed in the Old Testament background of the Gospel, the Jewish rabbinical tradition, the testimony and interpretation of the early Church Fathers, the Church's magisterial teaching, and the personal insights of a leading Catholic Scripture scholar.
Dr. Pitre makes the Scripture come alive, and his love for God's Word comes through loud and clear. He communicates profound insights into Scripture in a manner available to everyone, from the beginner to the accomplished student or scholar"
Fr. Miles Walsh, S.T.D.
The discussions following the video presentation is led by our own Fr Peter Okafor.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
